How to Reduce Image Size Without Losing Too Much Quality

Understand the trade-off between image dimensions, JPEG quality and file size, and learn a practical order for optimizing photos.

Image size has more than one meaning

People often use image size to mean either pixel dimensions or file size. A 4000×3000 photo can have a large file even after moderate compression, while a smaller image can still have a large file if it contains complex detail.

When a website specifies 100KB, 200KB or 1MB, it is talking about file size. When it specifies 600×800 pixels, it is talking about dimensions. Both constraints can apply at the same time.

A sensible optimization order

Crop unnecessary areas first. Next, reduce dimensions when the original is dramatically larger than the display or upload requirement. Then choose an appropriate output format and compression level.

For photographs, JPEG is often a practical output format because it can reduce file size substantially at moderate quality settings. Graphics with sharp text or transparency may be better kept in PNG or another suitable format.

Use a target-size tool when the limit is strict

Manual quality sliders are difficult when a form says maximum 100KB. A target-size tool can iteratively adjust encoding and, when necessary, dimensions until the result fits the requested limit.

Can I reduce a file without any quality loss?

Sometimes you can remove unnecessary metadata or choose a more efficient format without a noticeable visual change. Lossy compression, however, involves a quality trade-off, so no quality loss should not be promised for every image.
