For equal elevations, increasing flow speed requires lower static pressure when losses and machine work are neglected.

  • The base equation assumes steady, incompressible, inviscid flow along a streamline.
  • Pump/turbine work and friction/head losses are not included in this ideal form.

Frequently asked questions

When is Bernoulli’s equation inaccurate?

Real systems with substantial friction, pumps, turbines, compressibility or unsteady flow require additional energy terms or a different model.

Can this explain pressure drop through a restriction?

It captures the ideal pressure-velocity tradeoff, but real restrictions also create irreversible losses that must be modeled separately.
