0°C, 32°F and the fridge and freezer numbers

0°C is 32°F, the temperature at which water freezes at normal air pressure. It is not the same as 0°F: a freezer set to 0°F is 18 degrees Celsius colder than the freezing point.

Reference point°C°F
Water freezes0°C32°F
FDA maximum for a refrigerator4°C40°F
FDA freezer setting−18°C0°F
Celsius and Fahrenheit read the same−40°C−40°F
  • The FDA asks for a refrigerator at or below 40°F (4°C) and a freezer at 0°F (−18°C); a fridge thermometer reading 32°F is colder than needed and can freeze salad and milk.
  • 0°C is 273.15 K. Pure water at its triple point sits at 0.01°C, slightly above the everyday freezing point.
  • Road surfaces can ice over when the air reads a few degrees above 0°C, because a clear night cools the ground below the air temperature.
  • On a Fahrenheit scale the freezing point is 32 degrees above zero, so "below freezing" in a US forecast means under 32°F, not under 0°F.

From Celsius, multiply by 9/5 and add 32; at 0°C only the 32 is left, so the answer is simply 32°F.

A quick note before you use the number

Celsius and Fahrenheit use an offset as well as a scale factor, so temperature conversion is not a simple multiplication. Kelvin is handled with the standard absolute-temperature formula.
