Generator Efficiency Calculator — Shaft Input, Electrical Output & Losses

Calculate generator or alternator conversion efficiency, total power loss, loss percentage and daily loss energy from measured shaft input and electrical output.

Live calculationWorking shown

95.24% generator efficiency

  • Electrical output: 100 kW
  • Mechanical shaft input: 105 kW
  • Total conversion loss: 5 kW (4.76%)
  • Loss energy at 8 h/day: 40 kWh/day
  • Working: η = 100 ÷ 105 × 100 = 95.24%
  • Check: 100 kW + 5 kW losses = 105 kW input

Measured generator conversion-efficiency model

Measure the generator/alternator conversion boundary directly: mechanical shaft power in versus useful electrical real power out. This avoids mixing alternator efficiency with diesel-engine thermal efficiency or fuel consumption.

How to use this calculator

1

Use mechanical shaft power delivered to the generator as input.

2

Enter measured electrical real-power output in kW at the same operating point.

3

Enter daily operating hours only if you want loss-energy context.

4

Compare efficiency and losses at matched operating points rather than mixing measurements from different loads.

5

For a fuel-to-electric assessment, use a separate engine/genset thermal-efficiency method because fuel energy is outside this alternator boundary.

Where people use it

  • •Commissioning or performance checks using measured shaft and electrical power.
  • •Comparing alternator efficiency at different load points.
  • •Quantifying conversion losses for an energy balance.
  • •Separating alternator losses from engine/fuel performance during troubleshooting.

Example: 105 kW shaft input, 100 kW electrical output

Efficiency = 100 ÷ 105 × 100 = 95.24%. Conversion loss is 5 kW, or 4.76% of shaft input. At 8 operating hours that represents 40 kWh of loss energy.

Keep shaft, electrical and fuel boundaries separate

  • •Input and output must describe the same operating point and compatible real-power boundaries.
  • •This is generator/alternator conversion efficiency, not diesel engine thermal efficiency, fuel-to-electric efficiency or whole-site efficiency.
  • •A kVA nameplate value is not electrical real-power output. Use measured or calculated kW at the operating point.
  • •Shaft-input measurement may require torque and speed instrumentation or a validated prime-mover test method; do not substitute engine nameplate kW blindly.
  • •Loss is aggregated. This calculator does not invent copper, iron, excitation, friction, windage or stray-loss shares without measurements or machine data.
  • •Efficiency above 100% is physically impossible for this boundary and is rejected.

Frequently asked questions

What is the generator efficiency formula?+

Overall generator conversion efficiency is useful electrical real-power output divided by mechanical shaft-power input, multiplied by 100.

Is generator efficiency the same as power factor?+

No. Power factor relates real kW to apparent kVA on the electrical side. Efficiency compares electrical kW output with mechanical kW input.

Can I use generator kVA as the output?+

Not directly. Convert or measure real kW at the operating point; kVA includes reactive current and is not the useful real-power numerator.

Why is my calculated efficiency above 100%?+

That indicates inconsistent boundaries, units, timing or measurements. Output cannot exceed input for a passive energy-conversion machine.

Does this calculate diesel fuel efficiency?+

No. Fuel-to-electric efficiency includes engine thermal conversion and auxiliaries. This owner intentionally isolates the generator/alternator boundary.

What causes generator losses?+

Typical contributors include winding copper loss, core loss, excitation loss, friction, windage and stray losses. Their individual values require machine-specific data or testing.

Keep the result connected to the real job

MAXScanner keeps the formula and assumptions beside the result so you can verify the number before using it in a drawing, estimate, specification, worksheet or document. Where a supplier, manufacturer, drawing or applicable standard owns a requirement, that source remains authoritative.
