How this savings projection works
Savings growth depends on more than one monthly deposit. This owner keeps the starting balance, recurring contribution, nominal annual rate, contribution timing and any annual step-up explicit. It also separates money supplied from estimated interest, shows a year-by-year schedule, restates the future balance in today’s-money terms when inflation is entered, and can work backward from a target goal.
How to use this calculator
Enter what you already have, the amount you plan to add each month, a nominal annual planning rate and the time horizon.
Choose whether deposits arrive at the beginning or end of each month. Add an annual contribution increase, inflation assumption or savings goal only when they belong to your scenario.
Review total contributions, estimated interest, goal gap or surplus, required starting monthly contribution and the year-by-year schedule before saving or sharing the scenario.
Where people use it
- •Emergency-fund and cash-reserve planning
- •House deposit, education, travel or other target-date savings goals
- •Comparing a fixed monthly habit with an annual step-up plan
- •Checking how contribution timing and inflation change the interpretation of the same nominal projection
Example: 1,000 saved + 200/month
Start with 1,000, add 200 at each month-end for 10 years and enter a 5% nominal annual planning rate. The calculator applies 5% ÷ 12 each month, tracks deposits separately from interest, and shows each year’s ending balance. Switch to beginning-of-month deposits to see the extra period of interest earned by each contribution.
Planning assumptions and limits
- •The entered annual rate is treated as a nominal annual planning rate divided by 12. Do not compare the result with an APY-based calculator unless the rate convention is matched.
- •A constant rate is a scenario assumption, not a promise. Actual bank rates or investment returns can change, and investments can lose value.
- •Taxes, fees, account limits, withdrawal rules and product-specific compounding conventions are not inferred.
- •Inflation-adjusted value is purchasing-power context based on the inflation rate you enter; it is not an inflation forecast.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator include my current savings?+
Yes. Starting balance is compounded alongside future deposits and remains separately visible in the total-contributed figure.
Why does beginning-of-month timing produce a different answer?+
A contribution made at the beginning of a month is in the balance when that month’s interest is applied, so it earns one additional monthly period compared with an end-of-month deposit.
Can it tell me how much to save each month for a goal?+
Yes. Enter a positive savings goal and the owner reverse-solves the starting monthly contribution under the same rate, timing and annual step-up assumptions.
Is the annual rate APY?+
No. This owner interprets the input as a nominal annual planning rate divided by 12. If your account quotes APY, convert or model that convention separately before comparing results.
