Image planning & checks
Image Pixel Calculator
Enter width and height in pixels to get the total pixel count, megapixels and reduced aspect ratio instantly. Add DPI when you also want an approximate physical print size.
Image Pixel Calculator
Calculate pixels, megapixels, aspect ratio and approximate print size locally in your browser.
Why use a pixel calculator?
Useful for
- Application and identity-photo upload requirements
- Camera and phone image comparison
- Social, web and marketplace image preparation
- Print planning before resizing or exporting
How to calculate image pixels
- 1
Enter the width
Use the image width in pixels, for example 1920.
- 2
Enter the height
Use the image height in pixels, for example 1080.
- 3
Choose DPI when printing
DPI affects the physical print size, not the number of pixels already in the image.
- 4
Read the result
Compare total pixels, megapixels, aspect ratio and estimated print size with the destination requirement.
Inputs, formulas and limits
- • Width and height must be positive numbers.
- • Total pixels = width × height.
- • Megapixels = total pixels ÷ 1,000,000.
- • Aspect ratio is reduced with the greatest common divisor.
- • Print size is an estimate from pixels ÷ DPI; changing DPI alone does not add image detail.
Pixels, megapixels and DPI are different measurements
Pixel dimensions describe the digital canvas. A 1920 × 1080 image contains 2,073,600 pixels, or about 2.07 megapixels.
DPI/PPI becomes useful when mapping those pixels to a physical print size. Increasing a metadata DPI value without resampling does not create extra pixels or recover detail.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the total pixels in an image?
Multiply pixel width by pixel height. For example, 1920 × 1080 equals 2,073,600 pixels.
How do I convert pixels to megapixels?
Divide the total pixel count by 1,000,000. A 4000 × 3000 image is 12 megapixels.
Does a higher DPI mean more pixels?
Not by itself. DPI maps existing pixels to physical size. Resampling is required to change the actual pixel dimensions.
Why is aspect ratio simplified?
A reduced ratio such as 16:9 is easier to compare with common screen, video, crop and layout requirements.
