A4 grid preview at 5 millimeter spacing

210 × 297 mm · 36 full columns × 53 full rows · screen preview is scaled

Benefits

  • Create sharp vector PDFs with physical spacing in millimeters or inches.
  • Preview binding margins on odd and even pages before making a notebook.
  • Download one design, a multipage PDF or a ZIP containing all three paper patterns.

Use cases

  • Sketch an electrical layout or record measurements on a consistent square grid.
  • Make dot-grid pages for a journal or project notebook.
  • Prepare ruled writing sheets for a class, meeting or field visit.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

Choose square grid, dot grid or lined paper.

  2. 2

Set paper size, orientation, spacing, margins and line or dot weight. Use a preset if it fits.

  3. 3

Review the preview. For binding, check the odd and even sides and choose the number of PDF pages.

  4. 4

Create the PDF and download it. Print at Actual Size or 100%, then measure the calibration ruler before printing a full batch.

The grid on the screen is not a ruler

A page preview changes size to fit your phone or monitor. Its squares therefore cannot tell you the physical spacing of the printed paper. The PDF stores that spacing in document coordinates: a 5 mm interval stays 5 mm when the printer uses the original page size at 100% scale. A print dialog set to Fit can quietly shrink the entire page, including the grid.

Start with one proof sheet. The optional line in the bottom margin should measure 50 mm between its end ticks. If it measures less or more, check the selected paper size and print scaling before changing the grid settings. A printer may reserve nonprintable space around its edges. The minimum 10 mm margin gives the grid some room, but it does not guarantee every printer can reproduce the same page.

Square grids are useful for tables, measurements and sketches. Dots give similar alignment cues with less continuous ink on the page, while ruled lines leave horizontal space for handwriting. The generator does not infer an engineering drawing scale from grid spacing. If five millimeters on paper represents one meter on site, record that scale separately and verify it against your drawing requirements.

Binding allowance shifts the usable area inward without changing the spacing. Alternating the allowance moves it from left to right on successive pages. Check your printer’s duplex flip setting with a two-page proof, particularly in landscape orientation. Page count creates repeated pages inside one PDF; it is separate from the number of copies requested by a printer. Use the printing-cost calculator with the generated PDF to estimate supplies for the actual job.

Formats, limits and privacy

  • Paper: A4, A5, A3, US Letter or Legal; portrait or landscape. Spacing: 2–25.4 mm. Margins: 10–40 mm; extra binding allowance: 0–25 mm.
  • PDF: 1–50 pages. ZIP: grid, dots and lined PDFs using the current page settings. SVG downloads the currently previewed side only.
  • No source file is required. PDF generation and preview stay in this browser. This generator does not control your physical printer.
  • Line weight is 0.1–0.8 mm; dot radius is 1.3 times that setting. Major grid lines use 1.8 times the normal line weight.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make quarter-inch graph paper?

Yes. Choose the ¼ inch preset, which sets the interval to exactly 6.35 mm. Print the PDF at 100% scale.

Why is my printed grid smaller than requested?

Fit-to-page or a mismatched paper size can rescale the PDF. Choose Actual Size, check the 50 mm ruler and make one proof print.

Can I create a notebook with alternating margins?

Yes. Set a binding allowance, enable alternating margins and generate multiple pages. Verify a two-page duplex proof before printing the full notebook.
