The calculation, without hidden assumptions
Decking quantity depends on more than square footage. Board face width and the gap between boards determine how many rows cross the deck, while the board-run length and stock length determine how many stock pieces are needed for each row. Fastener planning is a separate intersection problem: the number of board rows crosses the entered joist-line count. Example: 16 × 12 ft deck with 5.5 in boards
With a 0.25 in gap, each row occupies 5.75 in. Across a 12 ft width that requires 26 rows. A 16 ft board run over 16 in joist spacing gives about 13 joist lines, so two fasteners per intersection gives about 676 fasteners before any separate fastener overage.
What the result does not assume
- •Picture framing, breaker boards, diagonal layouts, board-end staggering and real offcut reuse can change the stock-board count. This page is a straight-row planning model, not a cut optimizer.
- •The fastener count is a board-row × joist-line planning estimate. Double joists, blocking, board-end details, hidden-fastener systems, edge fastening and manufacturer requirements can change the real quantity.
- •Actual face width can differ from nominal lumber size and composite profiles. Measure or use the manufacturer product dimension.

Why show both linear feet and whole boards?+
Linear feet describes the total decking length, while whole-board count also depends on how many stock boards are required to span each row before waste and offcut reuse.
Does this size joists or structural framing?+
No. It estimates surface decking and a transparent fastener planning count. Joist size, beams, connections and structural requirements are separate design tasks.
