The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Drywall takeoffs are more useful when the sheet count is only the first line, not the whole answer. This calculator measures the room shell, subtracts the opening area you enter, optionally includes the ceiling, rounds sheets up, and keeps screws, tape and compound as editable planning rates instead of pretending every fastening schedule or finishing level is identical.

How to use this calculator

1

Enter room length, width and height, then enter the actual combined area of doors or windows you are excluding.

2

Choose whether the ceiling is included, set the panel dimensions and a project-specific waste allowance.

3

Edit or clear the per-sheet rates for screws, tape, compound and price so the accessory estimate matches your own specification or supplier data.

Where people use it

  • Single-room drywall takeoffs
  • Comparing 4×8, 4×10 and 4×12 panel choices
  • Preparing a material worksheet before requesting a quote

Example: 12 × 10 × 8 ft room

The four walls total 352 sq ft. Add a 120 sq ft ceiling, subtract 40 sq ft of openings, and the board area is 432 sq ft. With 10% waste and 4×8 panels, the calculation rounds the purchase quantity up to whole sheets.

What the result does not assume

  • Fastener spacing, board orientation, finishing level, fire or moisture assemblies and local code can change the supporting-material quantities. Treat the optional rates as editable worksheet assumptions.
  • Panel layout can create offcuts that an area-only model cannot predict. Verify critical projects against a real sheet layout.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator subtract doors and windows?+

Yes. Enter their combined actual area. Leaving the field at zero keeps the full wall area.

Why can I edit the screw, tape and compound rates?+

Those quantities vary with board thickness, framing, fastening schedule, finish level and product. MAXScanner keeps the rate visible so it can be replaced with the project value.

Does sheet count round up?+

Yes. Drywall is purchased as whole sheets, so the waste-adjusted area is divided by panel area and rounded upward.

Keep the result connected to the real job

MAXScanner keeps the formula and assumptions beside the result so you can verify the number before using it in a drawing, estimate, specification, worksheet or document. Where a supplier, manufacturer, drawing or applicable standard owns a requirement, that source remains authoritative.
