Enter finished-product quantity and net weight per product before transport packaging.
Add packaging attached to each product, such as a retail box, polybag or insert.
Enter pieces per export carton and measured/estimated empty-carton tare; the calculator rounds carton count upward for the final partial carton.
Add shipped pallets and any shipment-level film, straps, dunnage or protection not already counted.
Optionally enter container tare only when you specifically need cargo-plus-container arithmetic. Verify final packed weights on calibrated equipment before documentation or booking.

For 1,000 products at 0.40 kg net each, 0.03 kg unit packaging, 20 pieces/carton, 0.8 kg carton tare, 4 pallets at 20 kg and 10 kg other packing: net product weight is 400 kg, packaging/tare is 160 kg and cargo gross weight is 560 kg.
What the result does not assume
- •Use actual measured finished and packed weights for final shipping documents; production, moisture and packaging tolerances can change real mass.
- •Cargo gross weight is not automatically chargeable weight. Courier and air-freight rating can compare actual gross weight with dimensional/volumetric weight.
- •This tool does not infer pallet count, pallet capacity or container tare. Enter values from the actual packing plan/equipment when applicable.
- •Container gross arithmetic here is not a VGM certification workflow and does not replace applicable SOLAS, carrier, terminal or regulatory procedures.
- •Do not double-count material: if carton tare already includes tape or liners, leave those components out of other packing unless they are genuinely additional.
Frequently asked questions
What is gross shipment weight?+
For this calculator, cargo gross weight is product net weight plus the packaging and transport materials that ship with the goods: unit packaging, cartons, pallets and other entered packing.
What is the difference between net and gross weight?+
Net product weight excludes the packaging modeled here. Gross cargo weight adds the entered packaging/tare components to that product weight.
Why is carton count rounded up?+
A physical shipment cannot use a fraction of a carton. If 101 products are packed 20 per carton, six cartons are required and the final carton contains one product.
Does gross weight include pallets?+
If pallets travel with the cargo, include their tare. If the shipment is floor-loaded without pallets, enter zero pallets.
Is gross shipment weight the same as chargeable weight?+
No. Gross weight is physical packed mass. A carrier may apply dimensional/volumetric rules, rounding, minimums or other tariff rules when determining chargeable weight.
Should I add container tare?+
Only for cargo-plus-container arithmetic when you have the actual tare. Cargo gross weight remains reported separately, and this calculator does not certify VGM.
