The calculation, without hidden assumptions
Compare the space-based weight of a packed parcel with its scale weight. The calculator keeps the divisor visible because carrier, service and contract rules differ; chargeable weight is the greater value under the selected assumption.
How to use this calculator
Measure the finished outside length, width and height, including packaging and bulges.
Choose centimetres or inches and enter the actual scale weight.
Select 5000, 6000, 4000, 139 in³/lb, or enter the divisor stated by your carrier or rate card.
Compare actual and dimensional weight, inspect which basis governs, then verify carrier rounding and service rules before rating the shipment.
Where people use it
- •Check whether a bulky parcel is likely to rate above its scale weight.
- •Compare 5000 and 6000 divisor assumptions before choosing an express or air-freight service.
- •Estimate the chargeable weight of several identical cartons.
- •Test whether reducing carton dimensions could move a shipment below its current dimensional-weight threshold.
50 × 40 × 30 cm parcel
At divisor 5000, dimensional weight is 50 × 40 × 30 ÷ 5000 = 12 kg. If the packed parcel weighs 5 kg, 12 kg is the larger planning chargeable weight before carrier-specific rounding.
What the result does not assume
- •A DIM divisor is a pricing rule, not a physical constant. Use the divisor and rounding method in the applicable carrier/service tariff or contract.
- •FedEx publishes rounding each dimension up to the next centimetre for its cited metric method; UPS publishes its own measurement and billable-weight rounding rules. This calculator uses the dimensions exactly as entered so assumptions stay visible.
- •This is a weight-planning calculator, not a shipping-rate quote. Zones, surcharges, minimums, service limits and negotiated rates are separate.
Frequently asked questions
What is dimensional or volumetric weight?+
It converts parcel volume into a weight-equivalent for shipping rating. A large lightweight carton can therefore have a dimensional weight above its scale weight.
Which weight is chargeable?+
Under common express DIM rules, compare actual and dimensional weight and use the greater applicable value. Always confirm the selected service tariff.
Why are there several divisors?+
Divisors vary by carrier, service, rate type and contract.
Should I round dimensions first?+
Follow the carrier rule. This tool intentionally does not silently round entered dimensions.
Can I calculate multiple boxes?+
Quantity scales identical packages. For mixed carton sizes, calculate each size separately unless the applicable contract explicitly permits aggregation.
