Formula and worked example
Roof area = footprint × √(1 + (rise/run)²); order area = roof area × (1 + waste%); squares = order area ÷ 100.
A 1,500 ft² footprint at 6/12 pitch has about 1,677 ft² of sloped roof area before waste.

- The footprint input represents horizontal projected roof area, not already-sloped surface area.

Why include pitch?
A sloped roof has more surface area than its horizontal footprint; the pitch multiplier accounts for that geometry.
