The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Siding can be sold by square, carton, panel or piece, so a calculator that assumes one product package is brittle. MAXScanner first totals the measured wall rectangles, subtracts the opening area you choose to exclude, adds a visible cutting allowance, and reports both square feet and siding squares. Then it uses the actual coverage per package or panel you enter to round the purchase quantity upward.

How to use this calculator

Enter up to three rectangular wall sections; for gables or other shapes, calculate their area separately and include the equivalent area in an appropriate section or use the Area Calculator first.

Enter the combined area of doors/windows you actually plan to deduct and choose the cutting/waste allowance for the layout.

Use the package or panel coverage printed by the manufacturer, then add optional package price for a material subtotal.

Example: 2,000 sq ft of net wall area

With 10% waste, 2,000 sq ft becomes a 2,200 sq ft order target, or 22 siding squares. If the selected carton covers 200 sq ft, the purchase quantity is 11 cartons.

What the result does not assume

  • Gables, dormers, starter strips, corners, J-channel, trim, overlaps and panel exposure can change the real bill of materials. This page estimates primary siding coverage, not every accessory.
  • Coverage per panel/carton must come from the actual product. Nominal panel dimensions can differ from exposed installed coverage because of overlaps and profiles.

What is a square of siding?+

A siding square is a planning unit equal to 100 square feet of covered wall area.

Should I subtract windows and doors?+

Subtract only the opening area your takeoff method and product instructions support. Small openings can produce reusable offcuts, but trim and cuts can also increase waste.

Can this calculate siding pieces?+

Yes when you enter the installed coverage per piece as the package-coverage value. For cartons, enter coverage per carton instead; the math then rounds cartons rather than individual panels.
