What this calculator actually models
Volt-amperes measure apparent power while watts measure real power. They are equal only when power factor is 1. This calculator supports both directions from one canonical page so reciprocal intent does not create a duplicate tool.
How to use this calculator
Choose VA → watts or watts → VA.
Enter the known apparent/real power and a power factor greater than 0 and no more than 1.
Read both the converted value and the relationship implied by the entered power factor.

Example: 1,000 VA at PF 0.8
Real power is 1,000 × 0.8 = 800 W. In the reverse direction, 800 W ÷ 0.8 = 1,000 VA.
Assumptions and limits
- •A single power-factor value is a simplified steady-state representation. Nonlinear loads and distortion can require true-power measurements.
- •This page does not determine UPS sizing margins, conductor size or protective-device ratings.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1000 VA always 1000 watts?+
No. They are equal only at power factor 1. At PF 0.8, 1000 VA corresponds to 800 W of real power in this simplified relationship.
Why is watts-to-VA on the same page?+
It is the reciprocal of the same real/apparent-power relationship, so one canonical calculator avoids splitting authority across duplicate tools.
Can power factor exceed 1?+
No. This calculator accepts values greater than 0 and no more than 1.
