Convert an image into a real ICO file

ICO is an icon container rather than a normal photo format. The useful conversion is therefore about producing icon-sized raster images inside an ICO package, not simply renaming a PNG.

Use the right source

A square PNG or other clean raster source gives the converter room to create multiple icon sizes. Transparent artwork can remain transparent when the source and output support it.

Check small sizes

Windows shortcuts and browser interfaces can display the same icon at very different sizes. Inspect the smallest generated image for thin strokes and small text before using it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert PNG to ICO?

Yes. The tool creates an ICO container from the source image and includes multiple icon sizes.

Does changing PNG to ICO improve quality?

No. It packages the artwork for icon use. The quality still depends on the source and the generated pixel sizes.

What size should an ICO contain?

Including multiple common sizes is useful because different interfaces can request different icon dimensions.

Can ICO files contain transparency?

Yes when the icon images inside the container support an alpha channel.
