How to use Video Compressor

  1. 1. Choose a supported MP4 or MOV or MKV or AVI or WEBM source file.
  2. 2. Set the options for the MP4 result and its destination.
  3. 3. Run Video Compressor and wait for processing to finish.
  4. 4. Open the result, verify playback or contents, then download the copy.

Input, output and processing

Input: MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WEBM · Output: MP4.

Heavy processing uses the dedicated media worker instead of blocking the web request. Keep the source until you have checked the generated result.

Practical guide

What to know before you process this file

The right video compression setting is the smallest file that still looks and sounds acceptable at the destination.

Best for

Web delivery where the original is unnecessarily large

Choose the constraint first

If the destination has a maximum size, work toward that limit. If it only specifies resolution, keep the required dimensions and reduce encoding data instead. Resolution, bitrate, frame rate and duration all affect the final size.

Compression is not the same as resizing

Resizing changes pixel dimensions; compression changes how the media is encoded. If a 4K recording only needs to be watched in a small embedded player, resizing first can save more data than lowering quality aggressively.

Verify motion and speech

Check fast movement, fine text, gradients and dialogue after export. A file that is technically smaller is not a successful result if important detail or understandable speech has been lost.

Questions people usually have

How do I make a video smaller without losing too much quality?

Start from the destination requirement, then reduce unnecessary duration, choose an appropriate resolution and use moderate compression. Keep the original so a higher-quality copy can be produced later.

Should I resize or compress a video?

Resize when the pixel dimensions are larger than the destination needs. Compress when the dimensions are appropriate but the encoded file is still too large. They can be combined.

Why did my video barely get smaller?

The source may already be efficiently encoded, or the selected settings may preserve most of its existing bitrate and dimensions.

Reduce video file size while keeping the picture usable

Video files become large because of dimensions, frame rate, codec settings and bitrate. Good compression starts with the destination instead of blindly pushing a quality slider down.

What makes the biggest difference

Resolution and bitrate are usually the most important controls. A 4K source intended for a small phone preview does not need the same data budget as a full-resolution master.

A short trim before compression can remove dead time and reduce the amount of video that needs to be encoded at all.

Judge the result by watching it

Check fast motion, fine text and dark scenes. Compression artifacts can hide in a still preview but become obvious during playback.

Keep the original when you may later need a higher-quality export.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a video smaller?

Reduce unnecessary duration, choose a practical resolution and use a suitable compression setting. The best combination depends on where the finished video will be used.

Will compressing a video lower quality?

It can. Smaller files usually require fewer bits, which can introduce visible artifacts if compression is too aggressive.

Is lower resolution always better for size?

Lower resolution usually saves space, but it can throw away detail you still need. Match resolution to the viewing or upload requirement.

Should I compress before or after trimming?

Trim first when possible. There is little value in compressing video that will be discarded immediately afterward.
