The calculation, without hidden assumptions
Turn measured coil geometry into an auditable theoretical mass. Use OD, core ID, width and material density, then optionally estimate strip length, line run time and entered capacity utilization—or reverse the same volume equation to find an OD for a target mass.
How to use this calculator
Choose Calculate weight for a measured coil or Maximum OD for a target mass.
Measure outside diameter, core inside diameter and coil width in the same selected dimension unit.
Choose a planning material density or enter a custom density from the material specification.
Optionally enter strip thickness to estimate unrolled length.
Optionally add line speed for theoretical run time and an entered capacity for a utilization diagnostic.
Treat calculated mass as a planning estimate and verify actual material/equipment data for operational decisions.
Where people use it
- •Estimate theoretical steel, aluminum, copper or brass coil mass from measured geometry.
- •Compare coil mass with an entered processing-equipment capacity.
- •Estimate PIW for receiving and coil-processing planning.
- •Estimate strip length and theoretical line run time when thickness is known.
- •Reverse-solve the outside diameter corresponding to a target coil mass.
1200 mm OD carbon-steel coil
For 1200 mm OD, 508 mm ID, 500 mm width and 7,850 kg/m³ density, annular volume is about 0.4641 m³ and theoretical mass is about 3,643.5 kg (8,032.6 lb), or about 408.1 lb per inch of width.
What the result does not assume
- •The annular-volume method assumes the wound cross-section is fully occupied by material; real winding gaps and shape variation can change actual mass.
- •Density varies by exact alloy, grade, coating and temperature. Use certified material data when precision matters.
- •Strip-length estimation assumes uniform effective thickness and does not model inter-wrap air or compression.
- •Capacity utilization only compares two entered numbers; it does not certify equipment suitability or account for dynamic limits.
- •PIW is pounds per inch of coil width, not pressure or strip basis weight.
- •This calculator is a planning estimator, not a certified scale measurement.
Frequently asked questions
How is steel coil weight calculated from OD and ID?+
The calculator finds the annular cylinder volume π/4 × (OD² − ID²) × width and multiplies it by the entered or selected material density.
What density does the calculator use for carbon steel?+
The planning preset is 7,850 kg/m³. Exact alloy or product data should replace a generic preset when available.
What is PIW for a coil?+
PIW means pounds per inch of coil width. It is coil weight in pounds divided by coil width in inches.
Can I calculate coil length too?+
Yes. Enter strip thickness and the same annulus geometry is divided by one-layer thickness to estimate unrolled length.
Can the calculator find maximum OD from a target weight?+
Yes. Maximum OD mode algebraically rearranges the same mass equation using target mass, core ID, width and density.
Why might actual coil weight differ?+
Material density, coatings, dimensional tolerances, winding gaps, edge shape and measurement error can all move the real value away from the ideal annular estimate.
