What this calculator actually models

Tape-measure math is awkward because feet use 12 inches while fractional inches often use halves, quarters, eighths or sixteenths. This calculator converts each measurement to total inches first, performs the selected operation, then normalizes the answer back to feet and inches.

How to use this calculator

1

Enter feet and inches for the first measurement. Fractions such as 3/4 and mixed values such as 6 3/8 are accepted in the inch field.

2

Choose add, subtract, multiply by a scalar, divide by a scalar, or convert only.

3

Review the normalized feet-and-inches answer together with total inches, decimal feet, centimeters and meters.

Where people use it

  • Reading and combining tape-measure dimensions
  • Carpentry, fabrication and site measurements
  • Converting architectural dimensions for drawings or specifications

Example: 4 ft 8 1/2 in + 2 ft 3 3/4 in

The two measurements equal 56.5 in and 27.75 in. Added together they equal 84.25 in, or 7 ft 0 1/4 in.

Assumptions and limits

  • The result rounds the displayed fractional inch to the selected denominator; keep the decimal output when more precision is required.
  • A length calculation does not replace drawing tolerances, fabrication allowances or field verification.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter fractional inches?+

Yes. Enter values such as 3/4 or 6 3/8 in the inches field.

How many inches are in one foot?+

Exactly 12 inches equal one foot.

Why convert to total inches first?+

Using one base unit avoids carrying feet and inches separately during arithmetic, then the result can be normalized back afterward.
