MAXScanner Calculator

Flight Duration Calculator

Calculate elapsed itinerary duration from local departure and arrival date-times in named IANA time zones, with date-specific DST handling and explicit validation for ambiguous or nonexistent wall times.

Assumptions visible

Rates, dimensions and limitations are kept explicit instead of hidden.

Date & time inputs

Use local itinerary times plus named zones.

Each wall-clock timestamp is resolved in its named IANA zone before subtraction. Date-specific DST changes are included; ambiguous or nonexistent DST wall times are rejected rather than guessed.

Calculated result

8h 0m 0s elapsed

Departure: 2026-11-02 09:00:00 (UTC+05:30)
Arrival: 2026-11-02 15:30:00 (UTC+04:00)
Departure instant: 2026-11-02 03:30:00 UTC
Arrival instant: 2026-11-02 11:30:00 UTC
8 elapsed hours

  1. 1. Resolve 2026-11-02T09:00 in Asia/Kolkata → 2026-11-02 03:30:00 UTC.
  2. 2. Resolve 2026-11-02T15:30 in Asia/Dubai → 2026-11-02 11:30:00 UTC.
  3. 3. Elapsed = 1793619000000 − 1793590200000 = 28800000 ms = 8 hours.

Named IANA zones use date-specific daylight-saving/offset rules from the runtime time-zone database. Nonexistent and ambiguous DST wall times are rejected rather than silently guessed.

This is elapsed time between the entered scheduled timestamps (often gate-to-gate), not a prediction of airborne time, delays, taxi time or actual airline operations.

How to use this calculator

Flight Duration Calculator uses local date-time inputs in your browser. Read the note beside the inputs carefully because date-time fields do not automatically carry a named time zone.

Step-by-step

  1. Step 1

Enter the requested date and time.

  2. Step 2

Check whether the calculation uses “now,” a duration, or a second timestamp.

  3. Step 3

Review the result and any time-zone or rollover note.

Common questions

Does the input include a time zone?

A browser datetime-local field does not include a named time zone. The page states when both timestamps must use the same basis.

Does the result update live?

No live clock is required for this calculation.

Can I use this across DST changes?

For named-zone conversion, use the Time Zone Calculator, which uses the browser IANA time-zone database.

Need a different calculation?

Planning notes

Cross-zone duration must resolve both local timestamps to real instants

Departure and arrival wall-clock times are not directly subtractable when their zones differ. MAXScanner resolves each timestamp in its named IANA zone, including date-specific DST rules, then subtracts the resulting UTC instants.

Why apparent and actual duration differ

A 09:00 departure and 15:00 arrival can represent less or more than six elapsed hours when the cities use different UTC offsets. The named-zone conversion removes that apparent-clock error.

Useful for

  • Itinerary elapsed-time checks
  • Cross-zone travel schedule validation
  • Comparing local departure and arrival timestamps

Limits and assumptions

  • This is scheduled timestamp elapsed time, not predicted airborne time.
  • DST ambiguous/nonexistent local times are rejected rather than guessed.
  • Airport/city selection is represented by the named IANA zone you choose.

Questions about this planning model

Does the calculation include DST?

Yes, through date-specific IANA zone rules available in the runtime.

Why can local clock difference disagree with elapsed duration?

Because departure and arrival zones can have different UTC offsets.

Does this predict delays or taxi time?

No. It only subtracts the resolved itinerary timestamps you enter.
