The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Wood weight is driven by volume multiplied by density, and density can change substantially with species, moisture content, grade and individual boards. Rather than presenting a species dropdown as false precision, MAXScanner lets you enter the density value you have from a defensible source or measurement. Example: ten actual 1.5 × 3.5 × 8 ft boards

One board contains 1.5 × 3.5 × 8 ÷ 144 = about 0.292 ft³. Ten boards total about 2.917 ft³. At an entered density of 34 lb/ft³, the estimated lumber weight is about 99.2 lb.

What the result does not assume

  • Published wood densities are averages and may be reported at different moisture conditions. Real boards can differ materially; use measured weight when load or transport limits are critical.
  • Nominal lumber size is not automatically converted to actual dressed dimensions. Enter the actual thickness and width you intend to weigh.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this calculator ask me for wood density?+

Species and moisture content can change weight substantially. An editable density keeps that assumption visible instead of hiding an average that may not match your lumber.

Can I calculate from board feet?+

Yes. One board foot is 1/12 of a cubic foot, so the calculator can convert a known board-foot total directly to volume before applying density.

Does nominal 2×4 mean I should enter 2 and 4 inches?+

Only if those are the actual physical dimensions. For dressed construction lumber, measure or use the actual product dimensions rather than the nominal name.
