Topsoil Calculator — Volume, Tonnes & Bags

Calculate topsoil volume from area and depth, then estimate cubic yards, cubic meters, mass from density and bag count.

Result

0.636 yd³

0.486 m³ · 4.9 kg at entered density

244 bag(s) at 2 L; allowance 3%.

Formula and worked example

Volume = area × depth; mass = volume × bulk density; bags = ceil(volume ÷ bag volume).

A 100 ft² bed at 6 in depth requires 50 ft³, approximately 1.852 yd³.

Assumptions

  • Bulk density is user-entered because soil composition and moisture change mass.
  • Compaction is not hidden; add an allowance if your project requires it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does soil weight vary?

Moisture, organic content and compaction can materially change bulk density.

Can I calculate raised beds?

Yes, use the bed footprint as area and desired soil depth as depth.
