The calculation, without hidden assumptions
Mulch calculators compete on more than cubic yards because the purchase decision is usually bagged versus bulk. MAXScanner supports rectangle, circle or direct-area input, converts the chosen depth into volume, applies an explicit allowance, rounds bag quantity from the bag size you enter and compares optional bag and bulk prices. An optional supplier-density input can add weight without pretending that all bark, wood chips, compost or rubber mulch share one density.
How to use this calculator
Choose imperial or metric units, then enter a rectangular bed, circular bed or a known total area.
Enter the finished mulch depth and allowance, plus the actual bag volume if you are comparing packaged material.
Optionally enter bag price, bulk price and a supplier density to compare purchase paths and weight; keep those fields at zero when you only need volume.
Where people use it
- •Garden-bed and landscape mulch ordering
- •Comparing bagged mulch with bulk cubic-yard or cubic-metre delivery
- •Checking coverage at a selected finished depth
- •Adding supplier-density weight for handling or delivery planning
Example: 20 × 5 ft bed at 3 in depth
One hundred square feet at 3 inches deep is 25 cubic feet, or about 0.926 cubic yard, before allowance. With 2 cubic-foot bags that is 13 whole bags before any additional overage.
What the result does not assume
- •Recommended mulch depth depends on the material, planting, climate and maintenance goal. MAXScanner calculates the depth you enter; it does not prescribe horticultural practice.
- •Mulch density and moisture content vary widely. Weight is shown only when you enter a density appropriate to the actual material.
- •Delivery fees, taxes, minimum bulk order increments and labor are not included unless they are already reflected in your entered unit price.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet does one cubic yard of mulch cover?+
Coverage depends on depth. The calculator reports coverage from the depth you enter; for example, a cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet, so coverage is 27 divided by depth in feet.
Can I compare bags with bulk mulch?+
Yes. Enter the bag size and bag price plus the bulk price. MAXScanner reports the whole bag count and material-only cost for both purchase paths.
Can I calculate a circular mulch bed?+
Yes. Choose circle and enter the bed diameter; the area is calculated with πr² before depth is applied.
Does the calculator estimate mulch weight?+
Only when you enter a bulk density. That keeps material and moisture variation visible instead of assuming one universal weight.

Keep the result connected to the real job
MAXScanner keeps the formula and assumptions beside the result so you can verify the number before using it in a drawing, estimate, specification, worksheet or document. Where a supplier, manufacturer, drawing or applicable standard owns a requirement, that source remains authoritative.
