The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Resolution alone does not tell you how dense a display is. The same 1920×1080 image can look coarse on a large panel and very fine on a small one. MAXScanner combines the pixel diagonal with the physical diagonal, then shows pixel pitch and total megapixels so the density result has useful context.

How to use this calculator

1

Enter the horizontal and vertical pixel resolution.

2

Enter the physical screen diagonal in inches.

3

Review PPI, pixel pitch, diagonal pixels, megapixels and simplified aspect ratio; use the linked print-size tool for printer/output sizing rather than treating PPI and print DPI as identical concepts.

Where people use it

  • Comparing monitors, phones and tablets
  • Checking display density for UI or image work
  • Relating screen size to resolution

Example: 1920×1080 on 24 inches

The pixel diagonal is about 2,202.9 pixels. Dividing by 24 inches gives about 91.8 PPI, with a pixel pitch near 0.277 mm.

What the result does not assume

  • PPI describes pixel density. Printer DPI, image metadata DPI and mouse DPI are different concepts even though the abbreviations are often mixed in casual use.
  • Advertised diagonal size may differ slightly from the active image area used by a particular display.

Frequently asked questions

Is PPI the same as screen resolution?+

No. Resolution is the pixel count; PPI also needs the physical display size.

What is pixel pitch?+

It is the physical spacing represented by one pixel, reported here as 25.4 mm divided by PPI.

Is PPI the same as printer DPI?+

No. PPI refers to pixels per inch of an image/display; printer DPI refers to printed dots and device behavior.

Keep the result connected to the real job

MAXScanner keeps the formula and assumptions beside the result so you can verify the number before using it in a drawing, estimate, specification, worksheet or document. Where a supplier, manufacturer, drawing or applicable standard owns a requirement, that source remains authoritative.
