400 × 400 pixels at a glance

400 × 400 pixels is a square image: 160,000 pixels in total (0.16 megapixels), with a 1:1 aspect ratio. Every non-square source loses part of its longer side when you crop to fill: a landscape phone photo keeps the middle 75% of its width.

It is a small web image: sharp in a thumbnail or profile slot, too small to fill a phone screen. On this page our three test files came out at 19 KB to 82.3 KB as JPG and 3.2 KB to 72 KB as WebP.

Where 400 × 400 is asked for, and whether it fits

X (Twitter) profile photo

X recommends 400 × 400 pixels for profile photos and accepts JPEG, GIF or PNG files up to 2 MB. 400 × 400 is exactly the recommended size. X shows the photo in a circle, so keep the face inside the middle of the square; the corners are hidden.

Instagram posts

Instagram keeps photos between 320 and 1080 pixels wide at their own resolution. 400 × 400 is not enlarged, but a 1080-pixel feed column shows it at well under half its native width. For a post, use 1080 × 1080; 400 × 400 is a profile-picture size.

Google Merchant Center product images

From 31 January 2027 Google requires product images of at least 500 × 500 pixels. 400 × 400 falls short by 100 pixels on each side, so it will not pass as a Shopping product image after that date.

Worked out from the pixel size. The crop rows assume the page's default "Crop to fill" setting.

How to make a 400 × 400 image

  1. Add your images

Drop one or more JPG, PNG or WebP files. All of them get the same size and format; you can move the crop for each one.

  2. Choose how to reach 1:1

Keep "Crop to fill" for a full frame with nothing stretched, and drag the preview so the subject stays inside it. Switch to "Fit inside, pad" when nothing may be cut off, such as a wide logo.

  3. Pick the format

JPG is accepted everywhere. WebP was smaller for most of our test files at this size, if the site accepts it; PNG keeps transparency but makes the largest files.

  4. Download and check

The file name ends in -400x400, and the results panel shows the exact pixel size and KB so you can compare them with the form before uploading.

What this page produced from our test files

We ran three fixed test files through this page in headless Chrome 129.0.6668.29 on 2026-10-19, with the default "Crop to fill" setting. Sizes are the bytes of the downloaded files. The test files are generated from a fixed seed so anyone can repeat the run; they are not customer photos. WebP was smaller than JPG for all three files, by 12% to 83%.

Before you upload a 400 × 400 image

  • Circular avatars hide about 21% of a square (the four corners). Text or a logo that touches the edges of a 400 × 400 image will be cut off.
  • At 300 DPI it prints at only 1.33 × 1.33 in (3.4 × 3.4 cm). It is a screen size; use a print-size page when you need paper.

Frequently asked questions

What aspect ratio is 400 × 400?

1:1. Any size with the same ratio, such as 800 × 800, has the same shape and can be resized to 400 × 400 without cropping.

How many KB is a 400 × 400 image?

In our tests, 19 KB to 82.3 KB as JPG and 3.2 KB to 72 KB as WebP. Without compression it would be 468.8 KB. Noise, text and fine texture make files bigger; flat graphics make them smaller.

How big does 400 × 400 print?

1.33 × 1.33 in (3.4 × 3.4 cm) at 300 DPI, or 2.67 × 2.67 in (6.8 × 6.8 cm) at 150 DPI. DPI only changes the print size, not the pixels, so the file is the same either way.
