Calculated result

223.73 kg · 493.23 lb

3.7288 kg/m · 2.5056 lb/ft

475 mm² ideal sharp-corner L-section area · 22.373 kg per piece

Enter rate/kg for procurement cost

Enter target mass for reverse whole-piece count

Enter supplier kg/m to compare nominal/table mass

Show the working
  1. 1. Area = (50 + 50 − 5) × 5 = 475 mm².
  2. 2. Unit mass = 475 × 10⁻⁶ × 7,850 = 3.7288 kg/m.
  3. 3. Piece mass = 3.7288 × 6 = 22.373 kg.
  4. 4. Batch mass = 22.373 × 10 = 223.725 kg.

This is ideal sharp-corner geometry. Rolled angles have root/toe radii and manufacturing tolerances, so standard or mill-table mass can differ. Use certified section data for structural design, contractual mass or lifting-critical work.

The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Calculate ideal equal- or unequal-leg angle mass from explicit L-section geometry. MAXScanner exposes the overlap correction, supports metric and imperial inputs, and keeps supplier/table mass comparison separate from the theoretical result.

How to use this calculator

1

Enter both outside leg lengths; use equal values for an equal angle.

2

Enter thickness and piece length, then choose metric or imperial units.

3

Use 7,850 kg/m³ for carbon-steel estimating or enter a documented density for another material.

4

Optionally enter rate/kg, target mass or a supplier kg/m value.

5

Check the substituted working before using the estimate for procurement.

Where people use it

  • •Estimate equal and unequal angle takeoff mass.
  • •Convert angle mass between kg/m and lb/ft.
  • •Estimate batch weight and material cost for fabrication.
  • •Reverse a target payload or order mass into whole pieces.
  • •Compare ideal geometry with a supplier or standard-table kg/m value.

50 × 50 × 5 mm angle, 6 m × 10 pieces

Ideal sharp-corner area is (50 + 50 − 5) × 5 = 475 mm². At 7,850 kg/m³ that is 3.72875 kg/m, about 22.37 kg per 6 m piece and 223.73 kg for 10 pieces.

What the result does not assume

  • •Rolled angles have root and toe radii; ideal rectangular-leg geometry does not reproduce every standard table exactly.
  • •Use certified mill/standard section data where nominal mass is contractual or safety-critical.
  • •Density varies by alloy and grade.
  • •This is a mass/procurement calculator, not a structural capacity or code-compliance calculator.
  • •Galvanizing, coatings, holes, cuts and fabrication can change delivered mass.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for angle weight?+

For an ideal constant-thickness L-section, area is (A + B − t) × t. Multiply area by density for mass per length, then by cut length and quantity.

Does it calculate unequal angles?+

Yes. Enter different leg A and leg B dimensions. Equal angles simply use the same value for both legs.

Why is my supplier kg/m different?+

Rolled products include root and toe radii plus manufacturing tolerances. The supplier or governing standard table should control when certified nominal mass matters.

Can I use inches and feet?+

Yes. Leg dimensions can be entered in inches and piece length in feet; results still report both kg/m and lb/ft.

Can I calculate pieces from a target weight?+

Yes. Enter a target mass and the calculator reports how many whole pieces of the entered length fit within it.

Is this suitable for structural design?+

No. Mass geometry does not establish grade, section properties, buckling resistance, connection design or code compliance.
