The calculation, without hidden assumptions
Plan label inventory without unwinding the roll. Enter wound geometry and feed-direction repeat to estimate web length, whole labels, usable yield, remaining stock and target OD; optionally use a verified full-roll count to audit effective wound caliper.
How to use this calculator
Measure the finished roll outside diameter and the outside diameter of the core.
Enter total wound caliper, including liner, adhesive, facestock and laminate when those layers stay on the roll.
Enter label length in the web/feed direction plus the gap to the next repeat.
Set labels across only when multiple labels are genuinely wound side-by-side on the same web.
Optionally enter current OD, target label count, or a verified full-roll count for calibration.
Use an explicit waste percentage only for your known setup/splice allowance; do not treat the default as an industry standard.
Where people use it
- •Check whether a thermal-label roll can finish a shipping run.
- •Estimate inventory remaining on a partly used roll.
- •Compare supplier roll builds using the same core, pitch and caliper assumptions.
- •Reverse-size a roll OD for a required label count before checking printer capacity.
- •Back-solve effective wound caliper from a verified production count without changing the nominal planning model.
203 mm OD label roll
A 203 mm OD roll on a 76 mm core with 0.16 mm total wound caliper has about 173.93 m of ideal web. At a 100 mm label plus 3 mm gap, one lane yields 1,688 whole theoretical labels before any entered waste.
What the result does not assume
- •This is ideal annular-roll geometry, not a certified count or printer compatibility guarantee.
- •Use the core outside diameter that contacts the wound stock, not a nominal inside diameter unless those are identical for your core.
- •Label width does not change single-lane linear count; feed-direction pitch does. Multi-lane count is an explicit multiplier.
- •Count calibration is diagnostic; it does not silently replace nominal caliper or certify future rolls.
- •Compression, adhesive flow, winding tension, telescoping, splices and leader/trailer stock can shift real yield.
- •Waste is user-entered and intentionally defaults to zero; MAXScanner does not invent a universal process-loss percentage.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate labels per roll?+
Estimate wound web length from OD, core diameter and total caliper, divide by label pitch, round down to whole repeats, then multiply by the real number of lanes across the web.
Does label width affect labels per roll?+
Not for a single lane along the feed direction. Width matters when a web carries multiple side-by-side lanes, which this calculator handles with the labels-across input.
Should liner thickness be included?+
Yes. Enter the total thickness of everything that remains wound on the core, including liner, facestock, adhesive and laminate where applicable.
Can I estimate labels left on a used roll?+
Yes. Enter the current outside diameter. The calculator applies the same annular geometry to the remaining wound stock and reports a theoretical whole-label count.
Can I calculate the OD needed for 500 labels?+
Yes. Enter the target count; the calculator reverse-solves the required web length and outside diameter from your core, pitch, lanes and caliper.
What does verified count calibration do?+
It back-solves the effective wound caliper implied by a known full-roll count and compares it with nominal caliper. It is a diagnostic check, not an automatic replacement for your specification.

Keep the result connected to the real job
MAXScanner keeps the formula and assumptions beside the result so you can verify the number before using it in a drawing, estimate, specification, worksheet or document. Where a supplier, manufacturer, drawing or applicable standard owns a requirement, that source remains authoritative.
