Everyday Planning Calculators

Metal Plate Weight Calculator — Steel, Aluminum & More

Calculate plate or sheet weight from length, width, thickness and material density. Get kg/lb, batch weight, kg/m², cost, reverse target thickness and measured-density diagnostics.

No hidden assumptions. Inputs, units and the working stay visible so you can check the calculation.

Calculated result

47.1 kg / plate

47.1 kg total for 1 plate(s)

94.2 kg/m² · 6,000 cm³ per plate

Enter a rate per kg for material-cost planning

Enter target plate weight to reverse-solve thickness

Enter measured plate weight to audit effective density

Show the working
  1. 1. Normalize dimensions: 1,000 × 500 × 12 mm.
  2. 2. Volume = 1,000 × 500 × 12 ÷ 1,000,000,000 = 0.006 m³.
  3. 3. Mass = 0.006 × 7,850 = 47.1 kg per plate.
  4. 4. Batch mass = 47.1 × 1 = 47.1 kg.

Nominal geometry × density estimate only. Actual alloy density, mill thickness/flatness tolerances, coatings, holes, cutouts and scale can change measured mass. Use certified material data and a calibrated scale for lifting, structural, contractual or safety-critical decisions.

The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Estimate a solid rectangular plate from transparent volume × density physics. Switch common metals or enter a verified custom density, then audit batch mass, area loading, optional material cost, target thickness and measured-weight variance.

How to use this calculator

1

Choose the dimension and output-weight units used on your drawing or stock list.

2

Select a nominal material density or choose Custom and enter density from your material data.

3

Enter finished plate length, width and thickness; use quantity for identical pieces.

4

Optionally enter price per kilogram for raw-material planning.

5

Optionally enter a target weight to reverse-solve thickness or a measured plate weight to audit effective density.

Where people use it

  • •Estimate mild-steel plate mass before purchasing or transport planning.
  • •Compare steel, stainless, aluminum, copper, brass and titanium plate weights for the same envelope.
  • •Calculate total batch tonnage for identical blanks.
  • •Reverse-size nominal thickness for a target mass before checking available stock gauges.
  • •Compare a measured plate against nominal geometry and density without silently changing the planning result.

1,000 × 500 × 12 mm carbon-steel plate

At the nominal carbon-steel density of 7,850 kg/m³, a 1,000 × 500 × 12 mm solid plate has 0.006 m³ volume and weighs 47.10 kg. Ten identical plates weigh 471.0 kg before packaging.

What the result does not assume

  • •Density presets are nominal planning values, not grade certificates. Exact alloy chemistry and temperature can shift density.
  • •The solid-plate model does not subtract holes, slots, bevels or other cutouts. Model those separately when their volume is material.
  • •Coatings, galvanizing, scale, protective film and attached hardware are excluded unless represented in measured mass.
  • •Nominal thickness can differ from measured thickness within manufacturing tolerances; do not invent a universal tolerance.
  • •For cranes, hoists, racks, structural loads or freight declarations, verify the actual product specification and measured mass.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate steel plate weight?+

Convert dimensions to consistent units, multiply length × width × thickness for volume, then multiply by the steel density. MAXScanner shows the substituted calculation rather than hiding it behind a shortcut constant.

What density does the calculator use for carbon steel?+

The carbon-steel preset uses a nominal 7,850 kg/m³. For a grade where the supplier publishes a different value, choose Custom and enter that verified density.

Can I calculate aluminum plate weight?+

Yes. Select Aluminum 6061 for the nominal 2,700 kg/m³ preset, or use Custom for another alloy density from its material data.

Does this include holes or cutouts?+

No. The owner models a solid rectangular plate. Subtract the verified volume and mass of holes or cutouts separately when they are significant.

Can I calculate thickness from a target weight?+

Yes. Enter a target plate weight and the calculator reverse-solves thickness using the selected material density and entered face dimensions.

Why might the actual plate weight differ?+

Actual dimensions, alloy density, mill tolerances, coatings and cut features can all differ from nominal inputs. The optional measured-weight diagnostic shows the effective density implied by your measurements without overwriting nominal math.
