The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Asphalt is measured as finished area and compacted thickness but normally purchased by mass, so density is the critical bridge between geometry and tonnage. MAXScanner never hides that value inside a mix preset. Choose imperial or metric units, enter dimensions or a known area, finished compacted thickness and the actual mix density, then apply a separate order allowance. Optional loose-volume uplift, truck capacity and price inputs provide planning outputs without pretending to design the pavement section or select an asphalt mix.

The geometry gives 200 cubic feet of compacted asphalt. Weight is not guessed from that volume: it is calculated only after multiplying by the density you enter, then the order allowance and truck payload are applied separately.

What the result does not assume

  • This calculator does not design pavement thickness, base course, subgrade, asphalt grade, binder content, lift structure or compaction procedure. Use the project design and supplier requirements.
  • Compacted density varies by mix and project. Replace the example density with specification, mix-design, laboratory or supplier data before ordering.
  • Truck payload, minimum delivery quantities, taxes, delivery fees and plant tolerances are outside the material-only cost calculation unless you include them in your entered price.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter loose or compacted asphalt thickness?+

Enter the final compacted thickness. The optional loose-volume uplift is shown separately and should only be used when you have a project-specific planning factor.

Why do I need asphalt density?+

Area and thickness produce volume; asphalt is ordered by mass. The entered compacted density converts the geometric volume into weight.

Can this estimate truckloads?+

Yes. Enter the usable payload for the delivery vehicle and MAXScanner rounds the order mass up to whole truckloads.

Does it tell me how thick a driveway should be?+

No. Thickness is a design input, not an output. Use the project specification or qualified design guidance.
