The calculation, without hidden assumptions
Sealcoat coverage varies with formulation, pavement texture, dilution instructions and whether the surface is new, smooth or badly weathered. MAXScanner therefore does not hard-code a universal square-feet-per-gallon claim. Enter the area and the manufacturer coverage rate for the selected application, choose the coat count, and the calculator turns that into theoretical gallons, allowance-adjusted gallons, whole pails and optional material cost.
How to use this calculator
Choose dimensions when the pavement is rectangular, or known-area mode if the surface has already been measured.
Enter coat count and the coverage rate stated for the exact sealer, pavement condition and application method.
Set a project allowance and the container size sold by your supplier; add price only when you want a material-only subtotal.
Where people use it
- •Residential driveway sealcoat planning
- •Small parking-area material estimates
- •Comparing container sizes using one product-label coverage rate
Example: 1,000 sq ft at two coats
At an entered coverage rate of 100 sq ft per gallon per coat, 1,000 sq ft with two coats needs 20 gal before allowance. A 5% allowance makes 21 gal; 5-gal pails then round the purchase to five pails, or 25 gal.
What the result does not assume
- •Crack filler, patching, sand/additives, primer and pavement repairs are separate material calculations. Follow the product instructions for preparation, dilution and application conditions.
- •Some labels publish different first-coat and second-coat rates. When those differ materially, calculate each coat separately rather than averaging rates without support.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet does a gallon of driveway sealer cover?+
There is no single reliable rate for every product and pavement. Enter the coverage stated by the exact sealer manufacturer for your surface and coat.
Should I calculate one coat or two?+
Use the coat system required by the selected product and your project. The calculator does not prescribe the number of coats.
Why does the purchased volume exceed the calculated gallons?+
The order quantity is rounded up to whole pails. The result shows the extra purchased volume so container rounding is not confused with waste allowance.

Keep the result connected to the real job
MAXScanner keeps the formula and assumptions beside the result so you can verify the number before using it in a drawing, estimate, specification, worksheet or document. Where a supplier, manufacturer, drawing or applicable standard owns a requirement, that source remains authoritative.
