The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Board-and-batten layout is a spacing problem before it is a material problem. A useful calculator must account for the actual face width of each batten, decide how the pattern meets both wall edges, force the design into a whole number of bays, and report the exact spacing that really fits. This tool can solve from either a target clear gap or a fixed batten count, then carries the finished layout into linear-foot, stock-board and optional cost planning.

Measure the uninterrupted finished wall width and the installed face width of the batten, not the nominal lumber label.

Choose target-gap mode to let the calculator find a practical whole count, or fixed-count mode when the design already specifies the number of battens.

Example: fitting battens to a 12 ft wall

A 144 in wall with 2.5 in battens and a target gap around 16 in cannot usually keep that target exactly. The calculator chooses a whole batten count, recomputes the equal clear gap, then reports every left-edge mark so the layout closes cleanly at the far end.

What the result does not assume

  • Trim returns, inside/outside corners, electrical boxes, openings and uneven walls can require segment-by-segment layouts; calculate uninterrupted spans separately when alignment matters.
  • Stock-piece count is a linear-foot planning estimate, not a cut optimizer. Short offcuts may or may not be reusable in the real layout.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter nominal or actual batten width?+

Use the installed face width you will actually see on the wall. A nominal lumber label can differ from the measured finished width.

Why is the final gap different from my target spacing?+

The target is a design preference. Because the wall must contain a whole number of battens, the calculator adjusts the gap so every bay is equal and the pattern fits the measured span.

Can I force an exact number of battens?+

Yes. Switch to fixed-count mode and the calculator solves the equal clear gap and layout marks for that count.
