Calculated result

2.495 kg total

4.99 g per sheet

2.495 kg per 500-sheet pack

2.495 kg per 500-sheet ream

2.495 kg paper only

5.5 lb packed total

Sheet area: 0.06237 m²

Show the working
  1. 1. Sheet dimensions = 210 mm × 297 mm = 0.06237 m².
  2. 2. Per-sheet mass = 0.06237 m² × 80 g/m² = 4.99 g.
  3. 3. Paper mass = 4.99 g × 500 sheets × 1 pack = 2,494.8 g.
  4. 4. Packaging = 0 g, so packed mass equals paper mass.
  5. 5. Final = 2,494.8 g = 2.495 kg = 5.5 lb.

The result is a theoretical mass from entered GSM and dimensions. Moisture, coatings, ink/toner, mill tolerances and real packaging can change measured shipping weight.

The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Estimate the physical mass of a paper job from the definition of GSM: grams per square metre. Use a standard sheet preset or custom dimensions, then scale one-sheet mass to packs, reams and the complete print run.

How to use this calculator

1

Choose A5, A4, A3, Letter, Legal, Tabloid or Custom size.

2

Enter the stock grammage in GSM and sheets per pack or job unit.

3

Increase the pack count for cartons or multi-ream print runs; optionally add known wrapper/box mass per pack.

4

Read per-sheet, pack, 500-sheet ream, paper-only and packed totals, then inspect the substituted working before using the figure for logistics.

Where people use it

  • •Estimate a print run before booking courier or freight.
  • •Compare how changing GSM affects a brochure, report or handout shipment.
  • •Check the theoretical weight of a ream or partial pack.
  • •Estimate custom-size sheet mass for print production and purchasing.

500 A4 sheets at 80 GSM

A4 area is 0.210 × 0.297 = 0.06237 m². At 80 g/m² one sheet is 4.9896 g, so 500 sheets are 2,494.8 g, or about 2.495 kg before wrapper/box weight.

What the result does not assume

  • •GSM is mass per unit area, not a direct measure of thickness, stiffness or opacity.
  • •US basis-weight labels such as 20 lb Bond or 80 lb Cover depend on grade-specific basis sizes; do not treat the pound number as physical package weight.
  • •For postage, freight, contractual or machine-load limits, weigh the finished packed job because coatings, moisture, ink/toner and manufacturing tolerance affect real mass.

Frequently asked questions

How much does one A4 80 GSM sheet weigh?+

A4 is 0.06237 m², so 0.06237 × 80 = 4.9896 g, about 4.99 g per sheet.

How much does a 500-sheet ream of A4 80 GSM paper weigh?+

The paper itself is about 2.495 kg. Wrapper and carton mass are additional.

Does higher GSM always mean thicker paper?+

No. GSM measures mass per square metre. Caliper/thickness also depends on fibre, coating, compression and stock construction.

Can I convert 20 lb or 80 lb paper directly to GSM?+

Only after identifying the US paper grade/basis size. Bond, Text, Cover and Index use different reference sheet sizes.

Can I use this total as courier chargeable weight?+

Use it as a planning estimate for actual mass, then weigh the finished parcel. Couriers can also apply volumetric/dimensional weight rules separately.
