The calculation, without hidden assumptions
Check a film roll specification from first-principles volume and density. Solve for net film weight, roll length, web width or thickness, then see theoretical GSM, film area and gross roll weight when a core mass is entered.
How to use this calculator
Choose the quantity to solve for.
Enter the other three physical quantities and select their units.
Choose a material-density planning preset or enter density from the supplier specification.
Add core weight only when you need an estimated gross roll weight.
Compare the calculated specification with supplier or measured values without treating a generic density as certification.
Where people use it
- •Check stretch-film or polyethylene roll labels and quotes.
- •Estimate film-only inventory and freight mass.
- •Reverse-solve roll length from measured net film weight.
- •Compare gauge, micron and mil specifications on the same physical basis.
- •Estimate theoretical GSM and area yield from thickness and density.
500 mm × 1500 m × 23 µm LLDPE
At 920 kg/m³ density, 1500 m × 0.5 m × 23 µm contains about 0.01725 m³ of film and weighs about 15.87 kg net. Theoretical basis weight is about 21.16 g/m².
What the result does not assume
- •Density presets are planning values, not a resin certificate; blends, additives and coatings change density.
- •Nominal gauge can differ from measured average thickness because of manufacturing tolerance.
- •Net film weight excludes the core; gross weight adds only the core mass you enter and does not silently add packaging.
- •The model assumes uniform thickness and width across the roll.
- •Stretch percentage is intentionally not used to change nominal roll mass; stretching changes applied geometry, not the material mass already on the roll.
- •For wound-roll OD from core geometry, use the Roll Length Calculator rather than duplicating that owner here.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate plastic film weight?+
Multiply roll length by web width and film thickness to get material volume, then multiply by material density.
Is film gauge the same as micron?+
No. One gauge is 0.254 micron; 100 gauge is 1 mil, and 1 mil is 25.4 microns.
Does the result include the cardboard core?+
The primary film result is net material mass. Enter core weight to see an additional gross-roll estimate.
Can I calculate roll length from weight?+
Yes. Length mode rearranges the same density equation using net film weight, width and thickness.
Why can supplier weight differ from the calculation?+
Actual density, average gauge, coatings, winding tolerances, core mass and packaging can all create differences.
Does pre-stretch reduce roll weight?+
No. Pre-stretch changes applied film length and thickness during wrapping; it does not change the original material mass on a roll.

Keep the result connected to the real job
MAXScanner keeps the formula and assumptions beside the result so you can verify the number before using it in a drawing, estimate, specification, worksheet or document. Where a supplier, manufacturer, drawing or applicable standard owns a requirement, that source remains authoritative.
