The calculation, without hidden assumptions
Size shrink film from the package you will actually wrap. The calculator keeps side/seal and end allowances visible, shows the opened web, estimates batch consumption and avoids pretending one film formulation or shrink ratio fits every machine.
How to use this calculator
Measure the finished product or bundle at its widest dimensions.
Choose centerfold film for an L-bar style workflow or sleeve/tubing for a layflat starting estimate.
Enter the side/seal and end allowances recommended for your machine and supplier.
Use the batch quantity and optional roll length to estimate procurement.
Round upward to an available film width and trial-wrap the actual product before production.
Where people use it
- •Choose a centerfold roll width for boxed retail products.
- •Estimate cut length before setting a manual or automatic sealer.
- •Plan shrink-film consumption for a production batch.
- •Compare inch and metric film catalogs.
- •Get a rectangular-product sleeve layflat starting point without confusing it with stretch wrap.
10 × 6 × 4 in box
With 2 in side/seal and end allowances, centerfold width = 6 + 4 + 2 = 12 in and cut length = 10 + 4 + 2 = 16 in. For 100 packs, that is 1,600 in (133.33 ft) of roll travel before setup waste.
What the result does not assume
- •This is packaging geometry, not a film-performance certification.
- •Supplier guidance commonly sizes centerfold film from product width + height plus an allowance; the correct allowance depends on seal jaws, product shape and process.
- •Centerfold film opens to twice its quoted folded width; do not confuse folded width with developed web width.
- •Actual shrink behavior varies by PVC, POF, PE and formulation, and by machine temperature/dwell/airflow.
- •Irregular, sharp, soft or compressible products require trial wrapping and may need extra film.
- •Gauge selection is separate from size; verify puncture, seal, food-contact and other application requirements with the supplier.
Frequently asked questions
How do I size centerfold shrink film?+
For a rectangular product, a common starting rule is folded width = product width + product height + a side/seal allowance. Keep that allowance explicit and round up to an available roll width.
What does 12 inch centerfold film mean?+
It is about 12 inches wide while folded and opens to roughly 24 inches of developed film width.
How much cut length do I need?+
This calculator uses product length + product height + an editable end/seal allowance as a transparent starting point. Your machine and package shape can require more.
Does shrink percentage reduce the film size I should order?+
Do not simply subtract the advertised shrink percentage. The unshrunk web still has to enclose the product and reach the seals; verify the actual formulation and machine setup by trial.
Is shrink film the same as stretch wrap?+
No. Shrink film is sealed around a product and contracts with heat; stretch wrap is tensioned around a load and normally is not heat-shrunk.
Can this calculate rolls needed?+
Yes. Enter batch quantity and a roll length in the selected unit. The result rounds procurement up to whole rolls, but setup scrap and changeover waste should be added separately if material.

Keep the result connected to the real job
MAXScanner keeps the formula and assumptions beside the result so you can verify the number before using it in a drawing, estimate, specification, worksheet or document. Where a supplier, manufacturer, drawing or applicable standard owns a requirement, that source remains authoritative.
