The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Roofing estimates are easy to distort when flat building footprint is confused with sloped roof surface. This calculator supports both workflows: enter already measured roof surface area, or enter a simple rectangular footprint and rise-per-12 pitch so the slope factor is explicit. It then applies the project waste allowance, converts the result to 100-square-foot roofing squares and rounds field-shingle bundles using the bundles-per-square value for the product being purchased.

How to use this calculator

Use measured-area mode when roof planes have already been measured. Use footprint mode only for a simple footprint where the pitch factor correctly represents the sloped surface.

Enter the rise per 12 inches of run and project waste allowance; verify the calculated surface area before converting to materials.

Enter the bundles-per-square value and optional bundle price for the exact shingle product, because package coverage differs among products.

Example: 40 × 30 ft footprint at 6/12 pitch

The flat footprint is 1,200 sq ft. A 6/12 slope factor is about 1.118, giving roughly 1,342 sq ft of simple sloped surface before waste. Add 10% and the order target is about 14.76 roofing squares; at three bundles per square that rounds to 45 field bundles.

What the result does not assume

  • Footprint × pitch factor is a simplified surface model. Hips, valleys, dormers, overhang geometry and multiple pitches can require separate roof-plane measurements.
  • Field shingles are only one material. Starter, ridge/hip cap, underlayment, flashing, ice/water membrane, nails and accessories need separate takeoffs using the selected roof system.

What is one roofing square?+

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface area.

Are there always three shingle bundles per square?+

No. Three is common for many products, but heavier or differently packaged shingles can use another bundle count. Enter the exact product value.

Should I use footprint area or roof surface area?+

Use measured sloped surface area when available. Footprint mode is a convenience for simple geometry and must be adjusted with the roof pitch factor.
