What this calculator actually models
Tile quantity comes from the project area divided by the face area of one tile, then rounded up because partial tiles still consume material. A separate waste allowance accounts for cuts, breakage and layout complexity.

Example: 10 ft × 12 ft room with 12 × 24 in tile
The room is 120 sq ft and each tile covers 2 sq ft. Before waste that is 60 tiles; with 10% waste the calculator rounds up to 66 tiles.
Assumptions and limits
- •Diagonal, herringbone, border and heavily cut layouts can require more waste than a simple straight layout.
- •The cost estimate includes only entered box cost; adhesive, grout, trim, labor, delivery and taxes are not included.
Frequently asked questions
How much extra tile should I buy?+
There is no universal percentage. Straight layouts often need less allowance than diagonal or complex layouts; use the waste input that matches the project.
Why are tiles rounded up?+
You cannot normally order a fraction of an individual tile, and cuts still consume whole tiles.
Can I estimate boxes?+
Yes. Enter the number of tiles per box and the calculator rounds the requirement up to whole boxes.
