2 × 2 inches in pixels, paper and proportions
2 × 2 inches is 50.8 × 50.8 mm (2 × 2 in), a 1:1 shape. At 300 DPI that is 600 × 600 pixels (0.36 megapixels); at 600 DPI it is 1200 × 1200. An upright phone photo (3:4) loses a quarter of its height when cropped to a square, so leave space above the head when you take the picture.
Who asks for 2 × 2 inches, and what else they check
US visa (immigrant and Diversity Visa)
The State Department asks immigrant visa and DV applicants to bring two identical 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) photos on photo-quality paper, with the head between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (22 to 35 mm), 50% to 69% of the image height. A 2 × 2 inch file at 300 DPI is 600 × 600 pixels, which also matches the smallest digital photo the visa application accepts.
Indian passport (via an Indian embassy)
The Embassy of India in The Hague asks for a colour photo of 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) in which the face takes 70% to 80% of the photo. Same paper size as the US photo, but a larger face: about 36 to 41 mm of the 51 mm height, so crop much tighter than for a US visa.
2 × 2 inches in numbers
Worked out from the physical size. Sheet counts assume photos placed edge to edge with no cutting margin.

How to make a 2 × 2 inches print file
Start from a fresh, sharp photo
Use the original camera file. A photo cut out of a larger print or a chat screenshot rarely has enough pixels for 600 × 600.
Crop to 1:1
Choose Crop and centre the subject. Fit adds borders and Fill stretches the face, which ID offices reject.
Keep 300 DPI
The DPI value only tells the printer how large to print; the pixels decide the sharpness. 300 DPI gives 600 × 600 pixels.
Print or lay out a sheet
Download one file per photo, or place several on a sheet (see the layout table) and print at 100% scale with "fit to page" switched off.
How many 2 × 2 inches photos fit on a sheet
Counts for common paper sizes, trying both orientations of the photo and keeping the larger number. Leave a few millimetres for cutting in practice.
| Sheet | Sheet pixels at 300 DPI | Photos per sheet | Layout |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 6 in photo print | 1200 × 1800 | 6 | 2 across × 3 down |
| A4 (210 × 297 mm) | 2480 × 3508 | 20 | 4 across × 5 down |
| US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) | 2550 × 3300 | 20 | 4 across × 5 down |
Before you print or upload 2 × 2 inches
- The US and Indian rules use the same 2 × 2 inch paper but different head sizes (50–69% vs 70–80% of the height). One print does not satisfy both.
- At 300 DPI this print file is 600 × 600 pixels, exactly the digital minimum of 600 × 600, so the same file can also be uploaded.
