3.5 × 4.5 cm in pixels, paper and proportions

3.5 × 4.5 cm is 35 × 45 mm (1.38 × 1.77 in), a 7:9 shape. At 300 DPI that is 413 × 531 pixels (0.22 megapixels); at 600 DPI it is 827 × 1063. Cropping an upright phone photo (3:4) to this shape keeps 96% of the picture, so only a thin strip is cut away.

Who asks for 3.5 × 4.5 cm, and what else they check

UK passport, printed photos

GOV.UK asks for 2 identical printed photos, 45 mm high by 35 mm wide, with the head (crown to chin) between 29 mm and 34 mm, in colour on plain white photographic paper with no border, taken within the last month. 3.5 × 4.5 cm is the same frame turned into centimetres. GOV.UK also says not to cut a photo down from a larger picture, so print this file at exactly 100% rather than trimming a bigger print.

UK passport, online application

For online applications GOV.UK wants a digital photo at least 600 pixels wide and 750 tall, between 50 KB and 10 MB, and asks you not to crop it. The online service wants the uncropped original, not this 3.5 × 4.5 cm print file.

3.5 × 4.5 cm in numbers

Worked out from the physical size. Sheet counts assume photos placed edge to edge with no cutting margin.

How to make a 3.5 × 4.5 cm print file

  1. Start from a fresh, sharp photo

Use the original camera file. A photo cut out of a larger print or a chat screenshot rarely has enough pixels for 413 × 531.

  2. Crop to 7:9

Choose Crop and centre the subject. Fit adds borders and Fill stretches the face, which ID offices reject.

  3. Keep 300 DPI

The DPI value only tells the printer how large to print; the pixels decide the sharpness. 300 DPI gives 413 × 531 pixels.

  4. Print or lay out a sheet

Download one file per photo, or place several on a sheet (see the layout table) and print at 100% scale with "fit to page" switched off.

Counts for common paper sizes, trying both orientations of the photo and keeping the larger number. Leave a few millimetres for cutting in practice.

Before you print or upload 3.5 × 4.5 cm

  • Width comes first in "3.5 × 4.5 cm" but GOV.UK writes "45 mm high by 35 mm wide". Both describe the same upright frame; a 4.5 × 3.5 cm landscape print is wrong.
  • A head of 29 to 34 mm fills 64% to 76% of the 45 mm height. If the face looks small in the preview, crop tighter before printing.
  • If the same office also takes a digital upload, note that 413 × 531 pixels is below its digital minimum of 600 × 750; upload a larger copy rather than this print file.
