800 × 800 pixels at a glance
800 × 800 pixels is a square image: 640,000 pixels in total (0.64 megapixels), with a 1:1 aspect ratio. Every non-square source loses part of its longer side when you crop to fill: a landscape phone photo keeps the middle 75% of its width.
It is a full-width web size that fills a phone screen or a blog column without looking soft. On this page our three test files came out at 42.6 KB to 317.9 KB as JPG and 5 KB to 241.9 KB as WebP.
Where 800 × 800 is asked for, and whether it fits
Google Merchant Center product images
Google requires at least 500 × 500 pixels for product images from 31 January 2027 and recommends about 1500 × 1500 or more. 800 × 800 passes the minimum but is about half the recommended size on each side, so zoomed views look soft. Upload a larger master if you have one.
Shopify product images
Shopify says square product images usually display best at 2048 × 2048 pixels and accepts images up to 5000 × 5000 (25 megapixels) under 20 MB. 800 × 800 works, but Shopify themes have to enlarge it for large and zoomed views. Use 2048 × 2048 for new product photos.
Instagram posts
Instagram keeps photos between 320 and 1080 pixels wide at their own resolution. 800 × 800 is posted unchanged, at 74% of the 1080-pixel feed width.
800 × 800 in numbers
Worked out from the pixel size. The crop rows assume the page's default "Crop to fill" setting.

How to make a 800 × 800 image
Add your images
Drop one or more JPG, PNG or WebP files. All of them get the same size and format; you can move the crop for each one.
Choose how to reach 1:1
Keep "Crop to fill" for a full frame with nothing stretched, and drag the preview so the subject stays inside it. Switch to "Fit inside, pad" when nothing may be cut off, such as a wide logo.
Pick the format
JPG is accepted everywhere. WebP was smaller for most of our test files at this size, if the site accepts it; PNG keeps transparency but makes the largest files.
Download and check
The file name ends in -800x800, and the results panel shows the exact pixel size and KB so you can compare them with the form before uploading.
What this page produced from our test files
We ran three fixed test files through this page in headless Chrome 129.0.6668.29 on 2026-10-19, with the default "Crop to fill" setting. Sizes are the bytes of the downloaded files. The test files are generated from a fixed seed so anyone can repeat the run; they are not customer photos. WebP was smaller than JPG for all three files, by 15% to 88%.

Before you upload a 800 × 800 image
- Square product shots made from a 4:3 phone photo lose a quarter of the width. Shoot with room on both sides of the product so the crop does not touch it.
Frequently asked questions
What aspect ratio is 800 × 800?
1:1. Any size with the same ratio, such as 1600 × 1600, has the same shape and can be resized to 800 × 800 without cropping.
How many KB is a 800 × 800 image?
In our tests, 42.6 KB to 317.9 KB as JPG and 5 KB to 241.9 KB as WebP. Without compression it would be 1.83 MB. Noise, text and fine texture make files bigger; flat graphics make them smaller.
How big does 800 × 800 print?
2.67 × 2.67 in (6.8 × 6.8 cm) at 300 DPI, or 5.33 × 5.33 in (13.5 × 13.5 cm) at 150 DPI. DPI only changes the print size, not the pixels, so the file is the same either way.
