Show the working
  1. 1. Regular hex area = (√3 ÷ 2) × 25² = 541.266 mm².
  2. 2. Unit mass = 541.266 × 10⁻⁶ × 7,850 = 4.2489 kg/m.
  3. 3. Piece mass = 4.2489 × 6 = 25.494 kg.
  4. 4. Net batch = 25.494 × 10 = 254.936 kg.

This is theoretical mass for a solid regular hex bar using the entered across-flats size and density. Corner geometry, dimensional tolerance, coating and alloy chemistry can change delivered mass; use certified supplier data for contractual, lifting-critical or safety-critical work.

The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Calculate theoretical mass for solid regular hexagonal bar using the ordering dimension across flats. The calculator keeps nominal geometry, purchasing allowance and supplier/table comparison separate.

How to use this calculator

1

Enter the nominal across-flats dimension of the solid hex bar.

2

Enter equal-piece length and whole-piece quantity in metric or imperial units.

3

Use the documented density for the actual material or alloy.

4

Optionally enter procurement allowance, rate/kg, target mass or supplier kg/m.

5

Review substituted geometry and supplier variance before ordering or logistics decisions.

Where people use it

  • •Estimate steel or stainless hexagonal bright-bar mass.
  • •Turn a machining-stock cut list into batch weight and cost.
  • •Compare steel, aluminum, brass or another documented material density.
  • •Reverse a payload or purchasing target into whole equal-length pieces.
  • •Compare supplier/table kg/m with nominal regular-hex geometry.

25 mm AF steel hex bar, 6 m × 10 pieces

Area = (√3/2) × 25² = 541.266 mm². At 7,850 kg/m³, unit mass is about 4.249 kg/m. One 6 m piece is about 25.49 kg and 10 pieces are about 254.9 kg before allowance.

What the result does not assume

  • •Enter across-flats size, not corner-to-corner diameter.
  • •Results use a regular sharp-corner nominal hexagon and entered density.
  • •Corner radii, dimensional tolerances, coatings and alloy chemistry can change delivered mass.
  • •Allowance is an explicit purchasing input, not a manufacturing standard.
  • •Mass geometry does not establish strength, machining suitability, lifting safety or code compliance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the hex bar weight formula?+

For a regular hexagon entered by across-flats size F, area = (√3/2) × F². With F in millimetres, kg/m = area × 10⁻⁶ × density in kg/m³.

What does across flats mean?+

Across flats is the perpendicular distance between two opposite parallel faces. It is not the larger corner-to-corner dimension.

How much does a 25 mm steel hex bar weigh?+

At 7,850 kg/m³, a nominal 25 mm across-flats regular hex bar is about 4.249 kg/m, or about 25.49 kg for 6 m.

Can I calculate pounds per foot?+

Yes. Enter inches and feet if preferred; results include kg/m, lb/ft, kilograms and pounds.

Why can a supplier chart differ?+

Supplier products can use different density assumptions, dimensional tolerances and corner geometry. Enter supplier kg/m to quantify the variance without replacing the theoretical result.

Can I use this for brass or aluminum hex stock?+

Yes when you enter a documented density for the actual alloy. Do not reuse carbon-steel density for another material.
