Show the working
  1. 1. Area = 25 × 25 = 625 mm².
  2. 2. Unit mass = 625 × 10⁻⁶ × 7,850 = 4.9063 kg/m.
  3. 3. Piece mass = 4.9063 × 6 = 29.438 kg.
  4. 4. Net batch = 29.438 × 10 = 294.375 kg.

This is theoretical mass for solid square stock from nominal side and entered density. Rolled corner radii, dimensional tolerance, coating and alloy chemistry can change delivered mass; use certified supplier data for contractual, lifting-critical or safety-critical work.

The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Calculate theoretical mass for solid square bar from cross-sectional area and material density. This owner is for solid square stock—not square hollow section—and keeps theoretical, procurement and supplier-comparison values separate.

How to use this calculator

1

Enter the nominal side of the solid square bar.

2

Enter piece length and whole-piece quantity in metric or imperial units.

3

Use 7,850 kg/m³ for carbon steel or enter documented density for another material.

4

Optionally add procurement allowance, rate/kg, target mass or supplier kg/m.

5

Review substituted working and supplier variance before purchasing or logistics decisions.

Where people use it

  • •Estimate mild-steel square bar mass.
  • •Turn a square-stock cut list into batch weight and material cost.
  • •Compare steel, stainless, aluminum, brass or another documented density.
  • •Reverse a payload or purchase target into whole equal-length pieces.
  • •Compare a supplier/table kg/m with nominal sharp-corner geometry.

25 mm steel square bar, 6 m × 10 pieces

Area = 25 × 25 = 625 mm². At 7,850 kg/m³, unit mass is 4.90625 kg/m. One 6 m piece is 29.4375 kg and 10 pieces are 294.375 kg before allowance.

What the result does not assume

  • •This calculator models solid square stock; use Hollow Section Weight for SHS/square tube.
  • •Results use nominal side and entered density.
  • •Rolled corner radii, tolerances, coatings and alloy chemistry can change delivered mass.
  • •Allowance is an explicit purchasing input, not a manufacturing or engineering standard.
  • •Mass geometry does not establish strength, load capacity, lifting safety or code compliance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the square bar weight formula?+

For solid square stock, area = side². With side in millimetres, kg/m = side² × 10⁻⁶ × density in kg/m³.

How much does a 25 mm steel square bar weigh?+

At 7,850 kg/m³, a 25 mm solid square bar is 4.90625 kg/m, so a 6 m piece is about 29.44 kg.

Is square bar the same as square tube?+

No. Square bar is solid. Square tube or SHS has a hollow centre and needs outside dimensions plus wall thickness; use the dedicated Hollow Section Weight Calculator.

Can I calculate pounds per foot?+

Yes. Enter inches and feet if preferred; results include kg/m, lb/ft, kilograms and pounds.

Why can a supplier table differ from this result?+

Real bars can have corner radii and dimensional tolerances, and material density can vary. Enter supplier kg/m to quantify variance without replacing the theoretical result.

Can I use this for aluminum or stainless square stock?+

Yes when you enter a documented density for the actual alloy. Do not assume carbon-steel density for another material.
