Convert a simple repeating work schedule into weekly hours, a 52-week annual total and a monthly average. This owner is for one hours-per-day × days-per-week pattern, not a day-by-day time card.
Enter scheduled hours per workday.
Enter a whole number of work days per week from 0 to 7.
Review weekly hours plus 52-week annual and average-month equivalents.
Weekly hours = hours/day × work days/week; annual hours = weekly hours × 52; average monthly hours = annual hours ÷ 12.

It uses weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12, so it is a yearly average rather than the exact hours in a specific calendar month.
No. The 52-week equivalent repeats the same schedule every week.

Multiply hours per day by work days per week to get weekly hours: 8 × 5 = 40. The monthly figure is weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12, which is 173.33 for a 40-hour week, and the yearly figure is weekly hours × 52, which is 2,080. Payroll and HR teams use these round numbers, but they assume you work every one of 52 weeks. A real calendar year, holidays and leave all move the total.
The 52-week convention gives 8 × 5 × 52 = 2,080 hours. The 2026 calendar has 261 weekdays, so 8 hours on every weekday is 2,088 hours. All 11 US federal holidays in 2026 fall on weekdays; taking them off leaves 250 days, or 2,000 hours. With 10 days of paid time off on top, the hours actually worked drop to 1,920. Which number is right depends on the question: 2,080 for converting a salary to an hourly rate, the lower figures for planning real capacity.
| Schedule | Hours per week | Average hours per month | Hours per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 hours × 5 days | 40 | 173.33 | 2,080 |
| 10 hours × 4 days (4/10) | 40 | 173.33 | 2,080 |
| 9 hours × 5 days | 45 | 195 | 2,340 |
| 8 hours × 6 days | 48 | 208 | 2,496 |
| 7.5 hours × 5 days | 37.5 | 162.5 | 1,950 |
| 7 hours × 5 days | 35 | 151.67 | 1,820 |
| 12 hours × 3 days | 36 | 156 | 1,872 |
| 6 hours × 5 days | 30 | 130 | 1,560 |
| 4 hours × 5 days | 20 | 86.67 | 1,040 |
Only by convention: 40 hours × 52 weeks. A calendar year has 52 weeks plus one or two days, and 2025, 2026 and 2027 each have 261 weekdays (2,088 hours at 8 a day), while 2028 has 260. Holidays and leave bring the hours actually worked lower.
40 hours a week averages 173.33 hours a month and 2,080 hours a year at 52 weeks.
Divide the PTO hours by the hours in your normal workday. 40 hours is 5 days if you work 8-hour days, but 5.33 days if your days are 7.5 hours.
7:00 AM to 4:00 PM is 9 hours on the clock. With an unpaid 1-hour lunch it is 8 paid hours, which makes 40 hours over 5 days. The Shift Hours calculator handles breaks and overnight shifts.
There is no single number. For the US employer health-coverage rules, the IRS counts an employee as full time at an average of at least 30 hours a week or 130 hours a month. Many employers use 35 to 40 hours in their own policies.
Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act, covered nonexempt employees are paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states and contracts add daily limits; the Overtime calculator works out the pay.
