Exam upload rules, ready to use
SSC CGL Signature Resize: 236×79 px, 10–20 KB JPG
SSC CGL asks you to upload only one image: your signature, as a JPG of 10 to 20 KB that measures about 6.0 cm wide and 2.0 cm high. The kit makes it 236 × 79 pixels, which is 6.0 × 2.0 cm at 100 pixels per inch. The photo is taken live by the form’s camera, so there is no photo file to resize.

SSC CGL uploads in short
- Signature: JPG/JPEG, 10–20 KB, about 6.0 cm × 2.0 cm (notice para 9.6).
- Photo: captured live through a webcam or a phone during the application, never uploaded as a file (para 9.4).
- A small signature is usually under the 10 KB minimum: ours was 7.9 KB at the highest JPG quality, and the kit padded it to 10.5 KB.
- The notice is not consistent: one instruction list in Annexure IV says about 4.0 × 2.0 cm, while para 9.6 and the main instructions say 6.0 × 2.0 cm. The kit follows 6.0 × 2.0 cm.
- Applications for CGL 2026 ran from 21 May to 22 June 2026. The next SSC notice will state its own dates and rules.
What SSC CGL asks for
Signature: 10–20 KB, about 6.0 × 2.0 cm
Para 9.6 of the CGL 2026 notice asks for a scanned signature in JPEG/JPG format between 10 and 20 KB, with an image size of about 6.0 cm wide by 2.0 cm high. It also warns that applications with blurred or “miniature” signatures will be rejected summarily.
A miniature signature is one that is tiny inside its image: a small scrawl in the middle of a big white page, scaled down to 236 × 79 pixels, ends up a few pixels high. The kit trims the empty paper around the ink before resizing, so the strokes fill the frame. Candidates who chose Aadhaar-based authentication are not rejected on this ground, the notice says, but the file rules still apply to everyone.
Photo: taken live, not uploaded
Para 9.4 says you do not need an existing photograph: the application captures one when it prompts you. Sit in good light against a plain background, keep the camera at eye level, look straight ahead and fill the marked area with your face, without a cap, mask or glasses. If your computer has no webcam, the upload page shows a QR code for the SSC app on a phone.
Para 9.5 adds a trap: if you hold an old photograph up to the camera, the application will be rejected. Take the photo of yourself, in person.
Why 236 × 79 pixels
The notice gives centimetres, not pixels, and says “about”. The portal cannot know the resolution of your scanner, so the parts you can control are the shape (3 : 1) and the KB range. The kit uses 100 pixels per inch: 6.0 cm becomes 236 pixels and 2.0 cm becomes 79 pixels, which keeps a clean signature small enough to need only a little padding to clear 10 KB.

How to prepare the SSC CGL files
1. Sign inside a 6 × 2 cm box
Draw a box 6 cm wide and 2 cm high on white paper and sign inside it with a black pen, using most of the box. Signing at the real size keeps the strokes thick enough to stay readable at 236 × 79 pixels.
2. Photograph it flat in daylight
Hold the phone straight above the paper, keep your shadow off the page and let the box fill most of the screen.
3. Add it with clean-up switched on
Keep “Clean up the paper background” and “Trim empty paper around the ink” on. Grey paper turns white and the margin is cut, so the signature is not miniature.
4. Read the 10 KB line
If the result says comment data was added, the picture was under 10 KB even at full quality. The image is unchanged, and the file is now between 10 and 20 KB.
5. Upload it, then take the live photo
Choose the JPG in the signature field. When the form asks for the photo, follow its camera prompt, or scan the QR code with a phone if there is no webcam.
What we got from real files
| File | What we added | Result | Size | Time | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Signature | Signature photographed on grey paper: 1600 × 1200 px, 85.1 KB | 236 × 79 px | 10.5 KB | 0.14 s | Made, padded from 7.9 KB, passes |
| Signature | Signature made for a bank form: 140 × 60 px, 1.9 KB | 236 × 79 px | 12.2 KB | 0.07 s | Made, passes |
| Signature | JPG someone had already prepared: 236 × 79 px, 13.1 KB | 236 × 79 px | 13.1 KB | 0.04 s | Already passed, kept unchanged |
The signature photographed on paper needed 2.6 KB of padding to pass the floor. The 140 × 60 signature from a bank application failed twice, wrong shape and only 1.9 KB, and was remade at 236 × 79; because that means enlarging a tiny file, signing again and photographing the paper gives a sharper result. The 236 × 79 file that was already 13.1 KB passed and was kept byte for byte.
When this page is not the right tool
- You want the SSC photo size. There is nothing to prepare: the form takes the photo live.
- You are applying for another SSC exam. Each SSC notice sets its own signature line; if yours says about 4.0 × 2.0 cm, use the signature resizer with a custom size of 157 × 79 pixels (4.0 × 2.0 cm at 100 pixels per inch) and a 10–20 KB target.
- Your only copy of the signature is a tiny old file. Enlarging it cannot add detail; sign again on paper.
Frequently asked questions
What is the SSC CGL signature size in KB and pixels?
The notice asks for a JPG of 10–20 KB, about 6.0 cm wide and 2.0 cm high. It gives no pixel size; the kit makes 236 × 79 pixels, which is 6.0 × 2.0 cm at 100 pixels per inch.
Do I need to upload a photo for SSC CGL?
No. The application captures your photo live with a webcam or a phone, and a photo of an old photograph leads to rejection. Only the signature is uploaded as a file.
Why does my SSC signature fail the 10 KB minimum?
A signature on white paper has very little detail, so at 236 × 79 pixels it compresses to about 8 KB even at the highest quality; ours was 7.9 KB. The kit adds blank comment data inside the JPG to reach 10.5 KB without changing the picture, and says so.
Is the SSC CGL signature 6 × 2 cm or 4 × 2 cm?
The CGL 2026 notice says about 6.0 × 2.0 cm in para 9.6 and in its main instructions, and about 4.0 × 2.0 cm in one list in Annexure IV. The kit uses 6.0 × 2.0 cm; both are “about” sizes with the same 10–20 KB rule.
Can I reuse my bank exam signature (140 × 60) for SSC?
Not as it is. It has a different shape and is usually far below 10 KB; our bank file was 1.9 KB. The kit can remake it at 236 × 79, but a fresh photo of your signature on paper will look sharper.
What does “miniature signature” mean in the SSC notice?
A signature that covers only a small part of its image, so it looks tiny when shown at the uploaded size. Sign large inside the box and let the kit trim the empty paper.
