1080 × 1080 pixels at a glance

1080 × 1080 pixels is a square image: 1,166,400 pixels in total (1.17 megapixels), with a 1:1 aspect ratio. Every non-square source loses part of its longer side when you crop to fill: a landscape phone photo keeps the middle 75% of its width.

It is a full-width web size that fills a phone screen or a blog column without looking soft. On this page our three test files came out at 33.8 KB to 519.7 KB as JPG and 6.3 KB to 405.4 KB as WebP.

Where 1080 × 1080 is asked for, and whether it fits

Instagram square posts

Instagram uploads photos up to 1080 pixels wide and keeps a photo at its own resolution when the shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. 1080 × 1080 is the largest square Instagram keeps without resizing, so this is the upload size that loses nothing on Instagram.

Apple Podcasts show cover

Apple Podcasts accepts square show covers from 1400 × 1400 to 3000 × 3000 pixels in PNG or JPG, without transparency. A 1080 × 1080 cover is 320 pixels short of the minimum and will be rejected. Use 3000 × 3000, which Apple prefers.

Google Merchant Center product images

Google recommends product images of about 1500 × 1500 pixels or more and requires at least 500 × 500 from 31 January 2027. 1080 × 1080 passes the minimum and is about 70% of the recommended side length.

How to make a 1080 × 1080 image

  1. Add your images

Drop one or more JPG, PNG or WebP files. All of them get the same size and format; you can move the crop for each one.

  2. Choose how to reach 1:1

Keep "Crop to fill" for a full frame with nothing stretched, and drag the preview so the subject stays inside it. Switch to "Fit inside, pad" when nothing may be cut off, such as a wide logo.

  3. Pick the format

JPG is accepted everywhere. WebP was smaller for most of our test files at this size, if the site accepts it; PNG keeps transparency but makes the largest files.

  4. Download and check

The file name ends in -1080x1080, and the results panel shows the exact pixel size and KB so you can compare them with the form before uploading.

What this page produced from our test files

We ran three fixed test files through this page in headless Chrome 129.0.6668.29 on 2026-10-19, with the default "Crop to fill" setting. Sizes are the bytes of the downloaded files. The test files are generated from a fixed seed so anyone can repeat the run; they are not customer photos. WebP was smaller than JPG for all three files, by 9% to 81%.

Before you upload a 1080 × 1080 image

  • Posting a larger square, such as 2048 × 2048, to Instagram does not make it sharper: it is scaled down to 1080 pixels on upload.

Frequently asked questions

What aspect ratio is 1080 × 1080?

1:1. Any size with the same ratio, such as 2160 × 2160, has the same shape and can be resized to 1080 × 1080 without cropping.

How many KB is a 1080 × 1080 image?

In our tests, 33.8 KB to 519.7 KB as JPG and 6.3 KB to 405.4 KB as WebP. Without compression it would be 3.34 MB. Noise, text and fine texture make files bigger; flat graphics make them smaller.

How big does 1080 × 1080 print?

3.6 × 3.6 in (9.1 × 9.1 cm) at 300 DPI, or 7.2 × 7.2 in (18.3 × 18.3 cm) at 150 DPI. DPI only changes the print size, not the pixels, so the file is the same either way.
