1080 × 1920 pixels at a glance
1080 × 1920 pixels is a portrait image 1080 pixels wide and 1920 tall: 2,073,600 pixels in total (2.07 megapixels), with a 9:16 aspect ratio. It is a phone screen held upright, the shape of stories, reels and Shorts. A landscape photo keeps only the middle 42% of its width.
It is a full-resolution phone-screen size: sharp on any phone held upright, and a camera photo still has to be scaled down to reach it. On this page our three test files came out at 82.9 KB to 989.2 KB as JPG and 10.8 KB to 858.7 KB as WebP.
Where 1080 × 1920 is asked for, and whether it fits
Instagram feed posts
Instagram keeps feed photos 1080 pixels wide uncropped when their height is between 566 and 1440 pixels (1.91:1 to 3:4). 1920 pixels is 480 pixels taller than the feed allows, so a 1080 × 1920 image posted to the feed is cropped to 1080 × 1440. Stories and reels use the full 9:16 frame.
YouTube Shorts thumbnails
YouTube asks for 9:16 Shorts thumbnails at least 640 pixels tall, recommends 2160 × 3840 and limits mobile uploads to 2 MB. 1080 × 1920 is half the recommended size on each side and three times the minimum height, a good balance between sharpness and file size. Our largest JPG at this size was 989.2 KB, within the 2 MB limit.
1080 × 1920 in numbers

How to make a 1080 × 1920 image
Add your images
Drop one or more JPG, PNG or WebP files. All of them get the same size and format; you can move the crop for each one.
Frame a tall picture
A landscape source keeps only a narrow vertical strip in a 9:16 frame. Drag the preview to the subject, or choose "Fit inside, pad" with a blurred background to keep the whole scene.
Pick the format
JPG is accepted everywhere. WebP was smaller for most of our test files at this size, if the site accepts it; PNG keeps transparency but makes the largest files.
Download and check
The file name ends in -1080x1920, and the results panel shows the exact pixel size and KB so you can compare them with the form before uploading.
What this page produced from our test files
We ran three fixed test files through this page in headless Chrome 129.0.6668.29 on 2026-10-19, with the default "Crop to fill" setting. Sizes are the bytes of the downloaded files. The test files are generated from a fixed seed so anyone can repeat the run; they are not customer photos. WebP was smaller for 2 of the three files but larger for the photo-style image, so compare both formats when the size limit is tight.

Before you upload a 1080 × 1920 image
- Phones crop or cover the top and bottom of a 9:16 frame with the profile name and reply bar. Keep text and faces away from the outer edges of the image.
- A 1920 × 1080 screenshot is smaller than this frame after cropping, so the tool enlarges it by 78%; small text will look soft.
Frequently asked questions
What aspect ratio is 1080 × 1920?
9:16, or 0.563 to 1. Any size with the same ratio, such as 540 × 960, has the same shape and can be resized to 1080 × 1920 without cropping.
How many KB is a 1080 × 1920 image?
In our tests, 82.9 KB to 989.2 KB as JPG and 10.8 KB to 858.7 KB as WebP. Without compression it would be 5.93 MB. Noise, text and fine texture make files bigger; flat graphics make them smaller.
How big does 1080 × 1920 print?
3.6 × 6.4 in (9.1 × 16.3 cm) at 300 DPI, or 7.2 × 12.8 in (18.3 × 32.5 cm) at 150 DPI. DPI only changes the print size, not the pixels, so the file is the same either way.
