1280 × 1280 pixels at a glance
1280 × 1280 pixels is a square image: 1,638,400 pixels in total (1.64 megapixels), with a 1:1 aspect ratio. Every non-square source loses part of its longer side when you crop to fill: a landscape phone photo keeps the middle 75% of its width.
It is a full-width web size that fills a phone screen or a blog column without looking soft. On this page our three test files came out at 80.2 KB to 780.1 KB as JPG and 10 KB to 634.4 KB as WebP.
Where 1280 × 1280 is asked for, and whether it fits
Instagram square posts
Instagram uploads photos up to 1080 pixels wide. A 1280 × 1280 square is scaled down to 1080 × 1080 on upload, so the extra 200 pixels are lost on Instagram.
Apple Podcasts show cover
Apple Podcasts accepts square show covers from 1400 × 1400 to 3000 × 3000 pixels. 1280 × 1280 is 120 pixels too small for a podcast cover.
Shopify product images
Shopify says square product images usually display best at 2048 × 2048 pixels. 1280 × 1280 works but is about 63% of that side length; zoomed product views enlarge it.
1280 × 1280 in numbers
Worked out from the pixel size. The crop rows assume the page's default "Crop to fill" setting.

How to make a 1280 × 1280 image
Add your images
Drop one or more JPG, PNG or WebP files. All of them get the same size and format; you can move the crop for each one.
Choose how to reach 1:1
Keep "Crop to fill" for a full frame with nothing stretched, and drag the preview so the subject stays inside it. Switch to "Fit inside, pad" when nothing may be cut off, such as a wide logo.
Pick the format
JPG is accepted everywhere. WebP was smaller for most of our test files at this size, if the site accepts it; PNG keeps transparency but makes the largest files.
Download and check
The file name ends in -1280x1280, and the results panel shows the exact pixel size and KB so you can compare them with the form before uploading.
What this page produced from our test files
We ran three fixed test files through this page in headless Chrome 129.0.6668.29 on 2026-10-19, with the default "Crop to fill" setting. Sizes are the bytes of the downloaded files. The test files are generated from a fixed seed so anyone can repeat the run; they are not customer photos. WebP was smaller than JPG for all three files, by 12% to 88%.

Before you upload a 1280 × 1280 image
- A 1920 × 1080 screenshot is only 1080 pixels tall, so a 1280 × 1280 crop from it has to be enlarged by about 19%.
- A 1920 × 1080 screenshot is smaller than this frame after cropping, so the tool enlarges it by 19%; small text will look soft.
Frequently asked questions
What aspect ratio is 1280 × 1280?
1:1. Any size with the same ratio, such as 2560 × 2560, has the same shape and can be resized to 1280 × 1280 without cropping.
How many KB is a 1280 × 1280 image?
In our tests, 80.2 KB to 780.1 KB as JPG and 10 KB to 634.4 KB as WebP. Without compression it would be 4.69 MB. Noise, text and fine texture make files bigger; flat graphics make them smaller.
How big does 1280 × 1280 print?
4.27 × 4.27 in (10.8 × 10.8 cm) at 300 DPI, or 8.53 × 8.53 in (21.7 × 21.7 cm) at 150 DPI. DPI only changes the print size, not the pixels, so the file is the same either way.
