1280 × 720 pixels at a glance
1280 × 720 pixels is a landscape image 1280 pixels wide and 720 tall: 921,600 pixels in total (0.92 megapixels), with a 16:9 aspect ratio (1.778:1). It is the shape of HD video and most monitors, so screenshots and video frames fit without a crop, while a landscape phone photo loses 25% of its height.
It is a full-width web size that fills a phone screen or a blog column without looking soft. On this page our three test files came out at 46.3 KB to 439.7 KB as JPG and 6.8 KB to 361.3 KB as WebP.
Where 1280 × 720 is asked for, and whether it fits
YouTube video thumbnails
YouTube asks for 16:9 thumbnails at least 640 pixels wide, now recommends 3840 × 2160, and limits mobile uploads to 2 MB (50 MB on desktop). 1280 × 720 is 16:9 and twice the minimum width, so it is accepted everywhere; it is a third of the newly recommended width. Our largest JPG at this size was 439.7 KB, within the 2 MB limit.
Microsoft Teams Rooms backgrounds
Microsoft sets 1920 × 1080 as the minimum custom background for Teams Rooms front-of-room displays; a background below the minimum makes every display fall back to "No Theme". 1280 × 720 is below that minimum, so it will not appear on a Teams Rooms display at all. Use 1920 × 1080.
Chrome Web Store screenshots
The Chrome Web Store accepts screenshots of 1280 × 800 or 640 × 400 pixels. 1280 × 720 is 80 pixels short of 1280 × 800, so a 16:9 screen capture has to be padded or recaptured at 16:10.
1280 × 720 in numbers
Worked out from the pixel size. The crop rows assume the page's default "Crop to fill" setting.

How to make a 1280 × 720 image
Add your images
Drop one or more JPG, PNG or WebP files. All of them get the same size and format; you can move the crop for each one.
Check the crop
Sources with the same 16:9 shape are only scaled, so the preview shows the whole picture. Other shapes are cropped to fill; drag the preview to choose what stays.
Pick the format
JPG is accepted everywhere. WebP was smaller for most of our test files at this size, if the site accepts it; PNG keeps transparency but makes the largest files.
Download and check
The file name ends in -1280x720, and the results panel shows the exact pixel size and KB so you can compare them with the form before uploading.
What this page produced from our test files
We ran three fixed test files through this page in headless Chrome 129.0.6668.29 on 2026-10-19, with the default "Crop to fill" setting. Sizes are the bytes of the downloaded files. The test files are generated from a fixed seed so anyone can repeat the run; they are not customer photos. WebP was smaller than JPG for all three files, by 11% to 85%.

Before you upload a 1280 × 720 image
- Older guides still list 1280 × 720 as YouTube's recommended thumbnail size. The current help page recommends 3840 × 2160; 1280 × 720 remains valid.
Frequently asked questions
What aspect ratio is 1280 × 720?
16:9, or 1.778 to 1. Any size with the same ratio, such as 2560 × 1440, has the same shape and can be resized to 1280 × 720 without cropping.
How many KB is a 1280 × 720 image?
In our tests, 46.3 KB to 439.7 KB as JPG and 6.8 KB to 361.3 KB as WebP. Without compression it would be 2.64 MB. Noise, text and fine texture make files bigger; flat graphics make them smaller.
How big does 1280 × 720 print?
4.27 × 2.4 in (10.8 × 6.1 cm) at 300 DPI, or 8.53 × 4.8 in (21.7 × 12.2 cm) at 150 DPI. DPI only changes the print size, not the pixels, so the file is the same either way.
