2048 × 2048 pixels at a glance

2048 × 2048 pixels is a square image: 4,194,304 pixels in total (4.19 megapixels), with a 1:1 aspect ratio. Every non-square source loses part of its longer side when you crop to fill: a landscape phone photo keeps the middle 75% of its width.

It is a large size that fills a desktop screen, and a phone camera photo still has to be scaled down to reach it. On this page our three test files came out at 139.9 KB to 1.76 MB as JPG and 19 KB to 1.49 MB as WebP.

Where 2048 × 2048 is asked for, and whether it fits

Shopify product images

Shopify says square product images usually display best at 2048 × 2048 pixels and accepts up to 5000 × 5000 pixels (25 megapixels) under 20 MB. 2048 × 2048 is exactly Shopify's recommendation for square product photos.

Apple Podcasts show cover

Apple Podcasts accepts square show covers from 1400 × 1400 to 3000 × 3000 pixels, PNG or JPG, without transparency, and prefers the largest size. 2048 × 2048 is inside the accepted range. Save as JPG, or as PNG without an alpha channel, because transparent covers are rejected.

Google Merchant Center product images

Google recommends product images of about 1500 × 1500 pixels or more, up to 64 megapixels and 16 MB. 2048 × 2048 is above the recommended size and far below the 64-megapixel limit. Our largest JPG at this size was 1.76 MB, within the 16 MB limit.

How to make a 2048 × 2048 image

  1. Add your images

Drop one or more JPG, PNG or WebP files. All of them get the same size and format; you can move the crop for each one.

  2. Choose how to reach 1:1

Keep "Crop to fill" for a full frame with nothing stretched, and drag the preview so the subject stays inside it. Switch to "Fit inside, pad" when nothing may be cut off, such as a wide logo.

  3. Pick the format

JPG is accepted everywhere. WebP was smaller for most of our test files at this size, if the site accepts it; PNG keeps transparency but makes the largest files.

  4. Download and check

The file name ends in -2048x2048, and the results panel shows the exact pixel size and KB so you can compare them with the form before uploading.

What this page produced from our test files

We ran three fixed test files through this page in headless Chrome 129.0.6668.29 on 2026-10-19, with the default "Crop to fill" setting. Sizes are the bytes of the downloaded files. The test files are generated from a fixed seed so anyone can repeat the run; they are not customer photos. WebP was smaller for 2 of the three files but larger for the photo-style image, so compare both formats when the size limit is tight.

Before you upload a 2048 × 2048 image

  • Instagram scales any square down to 1080 × 1080, so a 2048 × 2048 file is only worth it for shops, print or archives.
  • From a 1920 × 1080 screenshot the square crop is 1080 pixels tall, so the tool must enlarge it by about 90%; text in it will look blurred.
  • A 1920 × 1080 screenshot is smaller than this frame after cropping, so the tool enlarges it by 90%; small text will look soft.
  • At 300 DPI it prints at 6.83 × 6.83 in (17.3 × 17.3 cm), enough for a 6 × 4 inch photo print.

Frequently asked questions

What aspect ratio is 2048 × 2048?

1:1. Any size with the same ratio, such as 1024 × 1024, has the same shape and can be resized to 2048 × 2048 without cropping.

How many KB is a 2048 × 2048 image?

In our tests, 139.9 KB to 1.76 MB as JPG and 19 KB to 1.49 MB as WebP. Without compression it would be 12 MB. Noise, text and fine texture make files bigger; flat graphics make them smaller.

How big does 2048 × 2048 print?

6.83 × 6.83 in (17.3 × 17.3 cm) at 300 DPI, or 13.65 × 13.65 in (34.7 × 34.7 cm) at 150 DPI. DPI only changes the print size, not the pixels, so the file is the same either way.
