720 × 1280 pixels at a glance
720 × 1280 pixels is a portrait image 720 pixels wide and 1280 tall: 921,600 pixels in total (0.92 megapixels), with a 9:16 aspect ratio. It is a phone screen held upright, the shape of stories, reels and Shorts. A landscape photo keeps only the middle 42% of its width.
It is a full-width web size that fills a phone screen or a blog column without looking soft. On this page our three test files came out at 51.2 KB to 459 KB as JPG and 5.8 KB to 367.3 KB as WebP.
Where 720 × 1280 is asked for, and whether it fits
YouTube Shorts thumbnails
YouTube asks for Shorts thumbnails in a 9:16 shape at least 640 pixels tall and recommends 2160 × 3840. 720 × 1280 is 9:16 and twice the minimum height, so it is accepted, at a third of the recommended size. 1080 × 1920 is sharper if your source allows it.
Instagram feed posts
Instagram keeps feed photos uncropped only between 1.91:1 and 3:4. 9:16 is taller than 3:4, so a 720 × 1280 image posted to the feed is cropped to 720 × 960. Vertical 9:16 is a stories and reels shape, not a feed shape.

How to make a 720 × 1280 image
Add your images

Frame a tall picture
A landscape source keeps only a narrow vertical strip in a 9:16 frame. Drag the preview to the subject, or choose "Fit inside, pad" with a blurred background to keep the whole scene.

JPG is accepted everywhere. WebP was smaller for most of our test files at this size, if the site accepts it; PNG keeps transparency but makes the largest files.

What this page produced from our test files
We ran three fixed test files through this page in headless Chrome 129.0.6668.29 on 2026-10-19, with the default "Crop to fill" setting. Sizes are the bytes of the downloaded files. The test files are generated from a fixed seed so anyone can repeat the run; they are not customer photos. WebP was smaller than JPG for all three files, by 7% to 89%.
