The calculation, without hidden assumptions

A wainscoting layout looks intentional when the repeated panel fields close symmetrically across the measured wall. Instead of dividing the wall by a preferred panel width and leaving an awkward remainder, this calculator chooses a whole panel count, keeps the stiles equal, and reports the exact clear panel width. It also totals vertical stile footage and top, bottom or intermediate rail rows so design spacing and purchasing stay in one worksheet.

Example: equal panels on a 12 ft wall

A 144 in span with 3 in stiles and a 20 in target panel width will rarely divide perfectly. The calculator selects a whole count, reserves one more stile than panels, and spreads the remaining clear width equally so the first and last fields match.

What the result does not assume

  • Doors, windows, corners and built-ins can interrupt the pattern. For multiple wall spans, decide whether panel widths should match across the room before calculating each segment.
  • Stock count uses total linear footage and does not optimize individual cut lengths, scarf joints or offcut reuse.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there more stiles than panels?+

For a simple repeated panel field with a stile at both outer edges, N panels need N+1 vertical stiles.

Can I use this for board and batten?+

Yes for a lower-wall repeated-panel concept, but the dedicated Board and Batten Calculator is better when you mainly need vertical batten spacing and exact layout marks.

Should I subtract door openings?+

Treat openings as separate layout segments when the panel rhythm changes around them. A single net-area subtraction cannot preserve a symmetrical trim layout.
