Example: equal panels on a 12 ft wall
A 144 in span with 3 in stiles and a 20 in target panel width will rarely divide perfectly. The calculator selects a whole count, reserves one more stile than panels, and spreads the remaining clear width equally so the first and last fields match.
What the result does not assume
- •Doors, windows, corners and built-ins can interrupt the pattern. For multiple wall spans, decide whether panel widths should match across the room before calculating each segment.
- •Stock count uses total linear footage and does not optimize individual cut lengths, scarf joints or offcut reuse.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there more stiles than panels?+
For a simple repeated panel field with a stile at both outer edges, N panels need N+1 vertical stiles.
Can I use this for board and batten?+
Yes for a lower-wall repeated-panel concept, but the dedicated Board and Batten Calculator is better when you mainly need vertical batten spacing and exact layout marks.
Should I subtract door openings?+
Treat openings as separate layout segments when the panel rhythm changes around them. A single net-area subtraction cannot preserve a symmetrical trim layout.
