The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Concrete masonry units that share the same nominal outside size can have different face-shell and web geometry, so a serious core-fill estimate should not hide one universal void volume inside the calculator. MAXScanner asks for the fill volume per block from the exact manufacturer data, applies the portion of cores being grouted, adds a visible placement allowance, and converts the result to whole bags using the yield printed on the selected product.

Count the blocks in the wall or obtain the scheduled block count from the project takeoff.

Use the manufacturer or supplier fill-volume value for the exact CMU shape, then enter the percentage of cores/cells that the project requires to be filled.

Enter the actual mixed yield per bag, placement allowance and optional bag price to convert the geometric volume into an order quantity.

Example: 180 blocks with partial fill

If 180 blocks each have 0.25 ft³ of fillable volume and 50% of the cells are scheduled for grout, the raw volume is 22.5 ft³. A 10% placement allowance raises the planning volume to 24.75 ft³ before bag-yield rounding.

What the result does not assume

  • This calculator estimates material quantity only. The required grouting pattern, reinforcement, lifts, cleanouts, grout type and placement procedure come from the project design and applicable requirements.
  • CMU core volume and bag yield vary by product. Use the exact published or measured values for the materials being purchased.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this calculator ask for fill volume per block?+

Nominal block dimensions do not uniquely determine hollow-core volume. Face shells, webs and specialty shapes vary, so the manufacturer value is a safer planning input.

Can I calculate every-other-cell grouting?+

Yes. If the project truly fills half of the equivalent core volume, enter 50%. Use the actual scheduled grouting fraction where bond beams and special cells change the pattern.

Why are bags rounded up?+

Bagged material is purchased in whole packages. The calculator first estimates order volume, then divides by the entered mixed yield and rounds upward.
